As 1971 began, the Allman Brothers Band was riding a wave of critical success. Their 2nd album, Idlewild South, released in late 1970, had received a strong review from Rolling Stone magazine. The band’s best work, however, was still to come. The Allmans played 2 shows at the Fillmore East on March 12 and 13, which would be recorded and then released as a live album in July of that year. The resulting 2 disc set, simply entitled At Fillmore East, is often called the finest live album ever produced. Rolling Stone ranked it 49th on its list of the greatest albums in rock history. That album sealed the Allman’s reputation as one of rock’s most innovative, exciting and powerful live acts. While the Fillmore shows get the attention thanks to the historic album that documented them, the truth is that on almost every night in 1971, The Allmans, with Duane leading the way, were on fire. This soundboard (or excellent audience) recording captures the band in Birmingham on June 16, 1971, 4 dozen years ago today, 43 years ago today, just 3 months after the band's historic Fillmore East shows.  Unfortunately, Duane would die in a motorcycle crash just 4 months later.

On June 15, 1993, 26 years ago today, the legendary Apollo Theater hosted a concert in honor of its hall of fame.  It was a star studded event, featuring the likes of soul artists such as Ray Charles, Ben E. King and Al Green, Motown legends such as Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson and bluesmen BB King, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.  This soundboard recording captures EC and BB on stage together during that landmark event - too bad more of the show isn't circulating somewhere!

Eric Clapton/Allman Brothers Connections

• Eric Clapton once described Duane Allman as "the musical brother that I never had, but wished I did"
• Duane was instrumental in the recording of Clapton's masterpiece, the Derek & The Dominos double album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Duane played on 11 of the 14 tracks on the album, inspiring Clapton to reach deep inside himself to reclaim the guitar skills that once led kids in England to scribble “Clapton Is God” on the walls of buildings.
• In 2009, during the Allman Brothers' 40th anniversary concerts at the Beacon Theatre, Clapton joined them for 2 shows, on March 19 and 20.  The highlight of those concerts was EC and the Allmans playing numerous tracks from the Layla album.

Santana - 1970-06-13 - Portchester NY (SBD)

For a brief 18 month period from February 1970 to July 1971, the Capitol Theatre in Portchester NY (not to be confused with the Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ) was one of the premier concert venues on the East coast. Name a major rock act and they most likely played the venue. The Allman Brothers, Hot Tuna, Yes, Leon Russell, Grand Funk Railroad, Mountain, James Taylor, Traffic, Van Morrison, Jefferson Airplane and Derek & The Dominos, just to name a few, took the stage at the Capitol. The Grateful Dead were one of the most frequent visitors to the venue, including a 6 night run in February 1971. This soundboard recording captures Santana at the Capitol on June 13, 1970, 49 years ago today. By the way, Santana would return to the Capitol in October, on the heels of releasing the legendary album Abraxas, a show you can find here.  One final note - The Capitol eventually stopped hosting concerts, spent 40 years as a Broadway style theater and a catering hall and then in 2012, once again became a rock and roll venue.

Gregg Allman - 1987-06-12 - Clarkston, MI (FM)

In 1982, the Allman Brothers Band broke up, unable to operate as group anymore due to tensions, alcohol and drugs. Dickey Betts explained that "we broke up in '82 because we decided we better just back out or we would ruin what was left of the band’s image." For most of the next 5 years, Gregg Allman wandered around in a drunken haze, unable or unwilling to make new music. He later explained that “No two ways about it, the ’80s were rough. [...] It was seven years of going, "What is it that I do?” Being self-employed your whole life, that becomes a certain rock, a reinforcement. When that’s gone, not only are you bored stiff, but you just want to cry—"What do I do? I know I used to serve a purpose." In 1987, somehow, Allman again found that purpose, recording a solo album for Epic Records appropriately entitled I'm No Angel. The title track became a top 40 hit, and Allman went on tour in support of the disc. This FM broadcast captures him on May 14, 1987, 32 years ago today, in San Francisco, The success of the album brought new attention to the Allman Brothers, which was further reinforced the 2 years later by the release of the box set Dreams, celebrating the band's 20th anniversary. As the 1980s closed, the Allman Brothers would reform, and sat together for another quarter century!

Black Crowes - 1992-06-11 - Tokyo, Japan (SBD)

In May 1992, the Black Crowes released their 2nd studio album, entitled The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion The disc, which featured Marc Ford on guitar, replacing Jeff Cease, debuted at #1 on the Bilboard Album Charts. The album spawned the singles Remedy, Sting Me, Thorn In My Pride and Hotel Illness,  all of which topped the Billboard Rock Tracks chart. Remedy" and Thorn in My Pride also charted on the Billboard Hot 100.  This soundboard recording captures The Black Crowes on tour in support of their second album, in Tokyo on June 11, 1992, 27 years ago today.

Black Crowes/Allman Brothers Connections

• Former Allman Brothers's Band keyboardist Chick Leavell played on the Black Crowes debut album.
• On April 6, 1995, the Black Crowes were joined in studio by members of the Allman Brothers for a jam session.
• The Allman Brothers and Black Crowes both played at the One For Woody Concert on September 15, 2000, in honor of Allen Woody,who had passed away a month earlier.
• Both bands played Bonnaroo in June 2005.
• Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks of the Allmans, and Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes, were at different times, members of Phil Lesh & Friends.
