The Beatles - 1963 - #2: As promised a few days ago, here's the 2nd half of our Same Tour, Different Show entry featuring The Beatles in 1963. In the afternoon on December 7, 1963, 56 years ago today, The Beatles recorded a special concert for the BBC in their hometown of Liverpool. The concert, at the Empire Theatre, took place in front of 2,500 members of The Beatles' Northern Area Fan Club. Later that night, BBC Television broadcasted portions of the show from 8.10 pm to 8.40 pm during a special program entitled "It's The Beatles". The show came on the heels of the UK release in of their 2nd album, With The Beatles, which went to number one on the charts in their homeland and stayed there for 21 weeks. Two months later, on February 9, 1964, the Beatles again would be on television, though this time in America. That appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show forever changed rock and roll, and entertainment, as we know. Download this TV audio recording to hear the Fab Four just months before they conquered the US!

Jerry Garcia - 1977 - #1: As I’ve written in countless posts on this blog, 1977 was a magical year for the Grateful Dead. The spring tour, especially the 3 night runs on May 7,8 and 9, the middle night being the often proclaimed best Dead show ever at Barton Hall, and on June 7, 8 and 9 at Winterland (notice the symmetry of the dates!) is legendary among Dead Heads. The fall tour, which doesn’t get quite the same amount of attention, was almost as good. Numerous shows from both Spring and Fall have been officially released. Jerry Garcia, the band’s lead guitarist, vocalist and spiritual soul, clearly must have felt the magic of 1977, because he simply wouldn’t stop playing! For example, when the Dead had to cancel their summer tour due to Mickey Hart’s accident, the Jerry Garcia Band stepped in to fill the dates. Then, the minute the fall tour ended on November 6, the JGB hit the road for a series of shows that would lead into the Dead’s return to the stage at Winterland for a 4 night run to close the year, including their annual New Year’s Eve bash. This soundboard recording catches Jerry on December 6, 1977, 42 years ago today, at  at CW Post College. The playing is superb, as is the sound quality of the recording, and the set list offered fans in attendance a sneak preview of Garcia’s soon to be released album, Cats Under The Stars, as he played Reuben & Cherise from that disc.  Download this one, then come back on December 8, 11 and 23 for parts 2 to 4 of this Same Tour Different Entry set.

Tom Petty - 1982 - #1: This FM broadcast recording captures Tom Petty in London on December 12, 1982, 37 years ago today, about a month after the release of his 5th album, Long After Dark. Grateful Dead - 1979 - #1:  A few months ago, Dave's Picks 31 featured the Grateful Dead live in Chicago on December 3, 1979.  In the notes accompany the  CD, Dave Lemieux (the Dave in Dave's Pick's) noted that the Dead's performances in late 1979 felt fresh. That in large part was thanks to new keyboardist Brent Mydland, whose impact on the band, according to Lemieux, was "instant, inspired and inspiring." The Dead also brought to the table during that time a slew of new songs, which would be released the following year on the Go To Heaven album, including  Alabama Getaway  Far From Me, Althea, Feel Like a Stranger, Lost Sailor, and Saint of Circumstance. This soundboard recording captures the Dead the night after the show released on Dave's Picks 31, still in Chicago on December 4, 1979, 4 decades ago this very day! Elton John - 2001 - #1: On October 1, 2001, Elton John released his 26th studio album, entitled Songs From The West Coast.  The album was somewhat of a  return to his past, as he wrote songs with Bernie Taupin and saw Nigel Olsen return full time to the band. Elton launched a US tour in support if the album on October 5.  As the tour wound down in December, he made an appearance of the A&E show Live By Request, which featured Elton taking calls from fans (one of whom was Billy Joel!) and playing their requests.
