Peter Frampton - 1974-03-06 - Denver, CO  (FM)

In August 1969, Humble Pie released their debut album entitled, As Safe as Yesterday Is. The band featured Peter Frampton on guitar. Frampton would appear on 3 more Humble Pie discs before leaving the band to pursue a solo career. He released a solo album every year from 1972 to 1975, without a great deal of commercial success. While the album Frampton in 1975 went to #32 on the Billboard charts, the prior 3 discs failed to crack the top 100. Then, of course, in 1976 came the phenomenon known as Frampton Comes Alive, a double disc that sold over 6 million copies, went to $1 on the charts, spawned 3 top 15 singles, made the guitar talk box famous, and in some ways forever changed the music industry. Artists and record companies sought to produce similar blockbuster albums, and the late 1970s would produce a host of them including Rumours, Hotel California and Boston and Bat Out Of Hell. This FM Broadcast, however, captures Frampton before all the hype of his live album, playing a concert in Denver on March 6, 1974, 47 years ago today, The set list includes a host of tunes which would become famous thanks to Frampton’s historic live disc, including the legendary Do You Feel Like We Do.

Roger McGuinn - 1989-03-05 - Westboro MA (SBD)

In January 1989, Roger McGuinn, David Crosby and Chris Hillman reunited to tour as The Byrds. Their motivation, however, was not musical, but rather legal and financial. Another former Byrd, Michael Clarke, has been touring the country using the Byrds name, and had even applied for a trademark. To counter Clarke, the trio also applied to trademark the name The Byrds, filed a lawsuit gains Clarke citing deceptive business practices, and used the tour to demonstrate they had not surrendered the use of the name The Byrds to anyone else. While the trio's tour was a resounding musical success, it failed to convince the court to side in their favor, as Clarke gained complete ownership of the name The Byrds.  The reunion also didn't last long, as within a few months, McGuinn was back on the road again by himself,  This soundboard recording captures him in Westboro onMarch 5, 1989, 42 years ago today.

This soundboard recording captures Hot Tuna on March 3, 1988, 33 years ago today in San Francisco at a show that would become the launching pad for the 1989 Jefferson Airplane reunion! In 1986, Jack Cassady and Jorma Kaukonen reformed Hot Tuna after a 3 year layoff. Whereas their 1983 reunion tour focused on newer material with a heavy metal edge to it, much to their fan base’s chagrin, the 1986 version of Hot Tuna concentrated on their well known acoustic material. Paul Kantner joined the band in 1987 and 1988 adding some old Jefferson Airplane songs to the set list. At this show, Grace Slick joined in the fun, as did Papa John Creach and Will Scarlet. Within a year, the 5 of the 6 original members of Jefferson Airplane - Grace, Jorma, Jack, Paul and even Marty Balin, with Spencer Dryden being the only missing link due to some animosity between him and Kannter – had reformed for an album and a tour. In 1973, Bruce Springsteen released his first 2 albums to critical acclaim, but little commercial success.  So, as 1974 began, he took to the road, playing small clubs, college campuses and radio station gigs in hope of building an audience for his music.  It would be on this tour, in May 1974, that music critic Jon Landau, wrote the famous line, "Last Thursday, at the Harvard Square Theater, I saw my rock'n'roll past flash before my eyes. And I saw something else: I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen. And on a night when I needed to feel young, he made me feel like I was hearing music for the very first time."  Soon afterward, Landau would become Springsteen's manager and producer, and help him finish his landmark album, Born To Run.  That was still a few months in the future though, when Bruce played the 750 seat Gaston Hall on the campus of Georgetown University on March 3, 1974, 47 years ago today.  This FM broadcast captures the entire 90 minute show, featuring 10 songs from his first 2 albums. ABC's In Concert television series premiered on November 24, 1972, featuring a concert with Alice Cooper, Bo Diddley and Seals & Crofts from Hofstra University. The second episode, broadcast on December 8, 1972 featured The Allman Brothers Band and Chuck Berry. The show would become a regular Friday night feature and stay on the air until 1975. By the way, the Original executive producer of In Concert, Don Kirschner left in 1973 to start his own rival show, Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, which debuted in September 1973. This TV soundboard recording captures the Guess Who on In Concert, on March 2, 1973, 4 dozen years ago today. Two notes o thi show: 1) March 2 may be the broadcast date, not the actual show date and 2) this has also been circulated as January 26, 1973 at Madison Square Garden.

The Bangles - 1986-03-01 - Glasgow, Scotland (FM)

After gaining some recognition in 1984 with their debut album, All Over The Place, The Bangles found themselves on top of the rock world in 1986 after the release of their second disc, Different Light. The album reached number two on the Billboard Charts, and spawned four top 40 singles, including Manic Monday, which went to #2 in April, and Walk Like An Egyptian, which climbed to the top of the charts for 4 weeks in December. The band also received extensive airplay on MTV, furthering their popularity. The ride at the top would only last another 2 years, but it was fun while it lasted. This FM broadcast captures The Bangles at their peak, during a European Tour, in Scotland on March 1, 1986, 35 years ago today.
