1990s - #1:  As 1995 began, Howard Stern truly had become "King Of All Media".  His radio program on WXRK 92.3 FM was syndicated nationwide, and he became the first person to ever have the #1 radio show in both New York & Los Angeles. On December 31, 1993, his pay per view special drew over 400,00 subscribers, making it the largest non sporting event pay per view event in history. His 1994 autobiography, Private Parts, went to #1 on the New York Times best seller list. That same year, Billboard named him the Nationally Syndicated Air Personality of the Year, an honor he would receive every year until 2002.  This FM broadcast captures Stern celebrating his 41st birthday and all his success, on January 13, 1995, 27 years ago today.  The Spin Doctors serve as his house band, with appearances by Tom Jones, Willie Nelson and Phoebe Snow.

Bob Dylan - 1962-01-13 - New York, NY (FM)

1960s - #4:  In January 1961, Bob Dylan traveled to New York City to visit his musical idol Woody Guthrie, who was seriously ill with Huntington's disease in Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital. Guthrie had been a revelation to Dylan and influenced his early performances. Dylan stayed in New York, playin clubs around Greenwich Village, About a year after he arrived in the Big Apple, Dylan recorded a session for the radio program Folksinger's Choice, on January 13, 1962, 60 years ago today.  The session would air in March, right around the time hios first album was released.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

2010s - #2: About 6 years ago, on April 22, 2016, I saw America for the 2nd time, at a concert at the Morristown performing Arts Center. That was 38 years after that first time I saw them, in June 1978 at the Garden State Arts Center. That's the longest gap between concerts for any band that I've seen live, This IEM Matrix recording (Please note - it has some flaws and rough spots) captures America 3 years earlier, in Larchwood on January 12, 2013, 9 years ago today.  Like when I saw them, the set list includes all their big hits, as well as two great covers - Woodstock and California Dreaming.

David Bowie - 2004-01-11 - Minneapolis, MN (IEM Matrix)

2000s - #1: On September 16, 2003, Bowie released the album Reality, his 23rd studio disc. The album received mixed reviews but climbed to #29 on the Billboard charts in the US, and made it all the way to the #3 spot in the UK. On October 7, Bowie launched a world tour in support of the album, which included stops in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.  This IEM Matrix recording cpatures him in Minneapolis on January 11, 2004, 18 years ago today.  Unfortunately, The tour was cut short in June, however, when after a show in Germany, Bowie was diagnosed with a blocked artery that required an angioplasty procedure.  He would retire from touring in 2006, making this run of shows hos lat set of live performances.

1960s - #3:  On January 10, 1967, 55 years ago this very day Cream recorded a session for the BBC radio program Saturday Club (which would air 4 days later) at the Playhouse Theater in London, the same location where The Beatles recorded their 1964 appearance on that shows that we featured earlier this month. Incredibly, while the band had been together since July 1966, they had played only 1 show - on December 17, 1966 in Paris - outside their home country. All that would change in late February, when they launched their first European Tour, followed by their first U.S. shows in March. Cream would become a world wide phenomenon, which ironically, would become the source of their eventual breakup just over a year later. In January 1967, however, Clapton, Baker and Bruce were in peak form, enjoying their new partnership and creating a sound unlike anything heard prior., as evidenced in this FM broadcast.

Bruce Springsteen - 2018-01-09 - Walter Kerr Theatre, NY  NY (Ex Aud)

2010s - #1: On October 12, 2018, Springsteen on Broadway officially opened at the 960 seat Walter Kerr Theater in the Broadway district in New York City. The show  featured Springsteen, solo, playing guitar and piano, performing his songs from his long storied career, recounting tales from his life that he had originally shared in hiss 2016 autobiography, Born to Run, and sharing additional reminiscences  from his life specifically chosen for the show. Springsteen's wife, Patti Scialfa, appeared at most shows. The run was originally expected to conclude on November 26, 2017; however, due to high demand for tickets and issues with scalpers, additional dates were added through June 30, 2018. The show was extended a second time on March 20, 2018, until December 15, 2018.  The performances at the Walter Kerr Theatre grossed over $113 million from a total of 236 shows. In June 2021, Springsteen announced he would bring the show to the St James Theater, as part of the post pandemic reopening of Broadway. This excellent audience recording captures Bruce on Broadway on January 9, 2018, 4 years ago today.

The Beach Boys - 1966-01-07 - Tokyo, Japan (SBD)

1960s - #2:  The Beach Boys left California on January 5, 1966 and arrived in Tokyo the next day, their first visit to the Land of The Rising Sun.  The next day,  they played the first show of their tour, which would run until January 23. This soundboard recording captures that first concert, on January 7. 1966, 56 years ago today. What transpired at home in the US with the Beach Boys, however, was far more interesting than what took place on stage in Japan.  Brian Wilson has stayed behind, and began work on what would be perhaps the most important and influential album of the band's career, Pet Sounds.  The disc consistently shows up in the top 10 in almost every major rankling of rock albums.  For example,  in Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 ranking of the top 500 albums of all time, Pet Sounds finished 2nd, topped only by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
