Grateful Dead - 1969-08-16 - Bethel, NY (SBD)

In addition to playing together at Watkins Gken, The Grateful Dead and The Band both appeared at the original Woodsock Festival in 1969.  So, today and tomorrow, we will bring you their sets from that legendary event.  This soundboard recording captures the Grateful Dead on Day 2 of Woodstock, on August 16, 1969, 54 years ago today.  Unfortunately for The Dead, their performance at Woodstock was not one of their finest momnets.  They were plagued by PA problems, some of their own doing as their sound engineer, the legendary LSD chemist Owsley “Bear” Stanley, had tinkered with the equioment before the band took the stage, including leaving several wires ungrounded. Bob Weir touched one of those wires during St. Sptephen, shocking him and knocking out the PA system, causing a lengthy delay.  The fact that the band had over-ingested LSD didn't help matters.  Nothing quite worked as it should have, and the band was so disappointed in their performance that they did not allow any of their set to be included in the original Woodstock sound track album. Tedeschi Trucks Band - 2011-08-15 - Denver CO (SBD)

As promied, here's another post where one of the members of our 3 featured bands in involved in a side project. After touring together in 2007 as the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi's Soul Stew Revival, the husband & wife duo merged their respective groups to form the Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010.[ The newly formed band released their first album in 2011, entitled Revelator. The album went to #12 on the Billboard Charts, and won a Grammy for best blues album. This FM broadcast captures the band in Denver in support of Revelator on  August 15, 2011, a dozen years ago today.

Derek Trucks, of course, played guitar for the Allman Brothers from 1999 to 2014, before leaving to work full time on the Tedeschi Trucks Band.  It should be no suprise that he spent 16 years with the Allmans since his Derek's uncle Butch Trucks, was a founding member of the band. His wife, Susan Tedeschi sat in with the Allmans during their 40th anniversary run at the Beacon in 2009 at the March 19 and March 23 shows,  Susan also has one of the most unique connections to the Allman Brothers that one could imagine - she was born on November 9, 1970, the very day the aLbum Layla was released.  That album, by Derek an the Doninoes is not only where her husband's first name was derived, but also featured Duane Allman's guitar playing, which helped propel Eric Clapton to new heights of greatest!

As part of our tribute to The Garteful Dead, Allman Brothers, and The Band this month, we're trying to bring you shows by those 3 bqnds and their members from as many different decades as we can.  This show from August 14, 1994, 29 years ago today, is a rare 1990s sounboard recording of the Jerry Garcia Band.  Gracia would play 3 more solo shows in 1994, and then just 10 in 1995, beofre his tragic, far too soon pssing in August 9, 1995, less than a year after this concert.

Twenty five years after the original festival, rock royalty came together once again at Woodstock in August 1994. That 25th anniversary concert was originally scheduled for August 13 and 14 and billed as “2 more days of peace and music”, borrowing from the 1969 concert’s promotional posters. A 3rd day was eventually added on August 12. soundboard recording captures The Band, veterans of the original festival, playing a set on day 2 of Woodstock 94 on August 13, 1994, 29 years ago today,with help from Roger McGuinn, Bruce Hornsby, JHot Tuna, Bob Weir & Rob Wasserman!

The Allman Brothers also appeared at Woodstock 94, making for yet another major festival, along with Watkins Glen, where the bands both appeared. (by the way - throw in the fact that Bob Weir, who was with The Grateful Dead at Watkins Glen in 1973, sat in with The Band, and you have representation from all 3 of our featured bands this month at Woodstock 94. Three years earlier, Gregg Allman joined Rick Danko of The Band on stage at the Lone Star Roadhouse in New York City. In 2009, Levon Helm of The Band was one of the guests that appeared with the Allmans during theor 400th anniversary celebration at the Beacon in 2009.  Playing live togther, however, is not the only connections between The Band and The Allmans. For example, The Allmans played a cover of The Night The Drove Old Dixie Down for the album Endless Highway, a tribute to The Band. And,  according to legend, Duane Allman once said that Robbie Robertson of The Band was his favorite guitarist.

As part of our theme this month, we're trying to bring you shows from the Dead, the Allman and the band from a variety of decades. Today we capture the Dead in the 1990s with a soundboard recording from August 12, 1991, 32 years ago today.  As long time readers of this blog know, the period from 1989 to 1991 marked the last great period of the band's long storied career as evidenced by the number of official releases available:

Allman Brothers Band - 1989-08-11 - Mountain View, CA (SBD Matrix)

As the decade of the 1980s came to a close, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Woody, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This soundboard matrix recording captures the band near the start of that rebirth, in Montain View on August 11, 1989, 34 years ago today.

In Memory Of Robbie Robertson

Our decison to honor The Band this month, alongsiode the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brohers, is now a way to pay tribute to the life and kegacy of the great Robbie Robertson, who passed away yesterday. And it is 28 years since Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Desd passed on August 9, 1995.  A sad day indeed.

Unfortunately, the list of rock legends from the 1960s and 1970s who are no longer with us continues to grow. As the song says, "if there's a rock and roll heaven, well you know they have a hell of a hell of a band."
