Some years, like 1990, the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame is about reunions, and some years, like 1996, its about those who don't show up - Grace Slick of The Jefferson Airplane, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, and David Bowie.  Those who did show up performed, with the Airplane playing 3 tunes, and a David Gilmour led Pink Floyd playing Wish You Were Here. Throw in 2 songs from Stevie Wonder, who was on hand to induct Little Willie John, a new tune fron new inductees the Velvet Underground, and Patti Smith adding her own tribute to Lou Reed's seminal band, and it made for quite a night of music.

The biggest act inducted at the 1990 Rock & Roll Hall of fame ceremony was clearly The Who, who played a 3 song set. But some of the biggest moments belonged to 2 on stage reunions that some speculated might not happen. The original Four Seasons appeared together for the first time since 1970.  And Simon & Garfunkel reunited to play 2 tunes, including Bridge Over Troubled Water. One other note - the hall got one right by inducting Bobby Darin, one of the great voices of all time (and one of my favorite singers).

The Allman Brothers Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall oF Fame in 1995, a ceremony that is primarily remebered for the induction of Led Zeppelin. The band members who were inducted -  Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai "Jaimoe" Johanny Johanson, Berry Oakley and Butch Trucks - reflect the band's original line up from the early 1970s.  Later members, such as Warren Haynes, Chuck Leavell, Derek Trucks and Allen Woody, just to name a few, were not included.

For all of its faults - and the list is pretty long - the Rock and Roll hall of Fame occiasionally gets things right. No better example is the 1987 induction class, which included several 3 blues legends whose influence on rock & roll was profound - including Bo Diddley, BB King and Muddy Waters!

The 1991 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony took place just as the Persian Gulf War started, putting a damper on the evening's festivties. Perhaps then, it was fitting that The Byrds, including David Crosby, reunited that night for their induction, singing 3 songs including Turn, Turn Tiu, Turn, with its so appropriate line, "a time for peace, I swear its not too late."

Unlike other years, the 1992 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony had no drama to overshadow the honoress or the muisc.  Both Neil Young and the Iseley Brothers played tunes in honor of the late, great Jimi Hendrix, while Santana played I Love You Too Much in honor of promoter Bill Graham.  And the Hall got something right by inducting the Man In Black, Johnny Cash, who played Big River and traded guitar licks with the likes of Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page of The Yardbirds.

Grateful Dead - 1967-01-14 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

As mentioned in earlier posts this month, the Grateful Dead were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In the true spirit of the 1960s flower power era, the band attempted to be incredibly inclusive, listing 12 members as part of the band for induction. In addition to the then current line up of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Vince Welnick, Mickey Hary and Bill Kruetzmann, the Dead also included former keyboard players Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Brent Mydland, Keith Godchaux, and  Tom Constanten, not to mention vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux. They even included lyricist Robert Hunetr, who in collaboration with Garcia, had written some of the band's most famous tunes, including Uncle John's Band, US Blues, St Stephen, Eyes Of The World, Ripple, and Touch Of Grey, just to name a few.  That said, I still think they missed 2 other members of the Dead family who should have been inducted.  First is Bruce Hornsby, who played keyboards for them for almost 2 years alongside Welnick, about the same length of service as Constanten.  Hornsby obviously was not offended, as he inducted the band.  Second was John Perry Barlow,  who worked with Weir in the same way Hunter partnered with Garcia. Weir/Barlow tunes, while not as numerous or famous as Garcia/Hunter compositions, included such staples of the Dead's live performances as Estimated Prophet, Cassidy, Looks Like Rain, Throwing Stones, and The Msuic Never Stopped, just to cite a few.

In any event, this soundboard recording goes back to the very beginnings of the Grateful Dead, before they released their first album, to a concert on Janaury 14, 1967, 57 years ago today, a seminal moment in the rise of the counter culture in San Francisco. That day, some 25,000 flower children descended on Golden Gate Park for what was advertised as "A Gathering of the Tribes for a Human Be-In".  The Human Be-In, for short, featured counter culure speakers such as Timothy Leary and Alan Ginsberg, with music from The Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and The Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Blue Cheer, all fueled by copious amounts of LSD provided by Owsley Stanley.  The event gathered national attention, and thousands of young Americans soon began to flock to San Francisco.  All in all, the events of Janaury 14, 1967 were a prelude to the Summer of Love, and a time of seismic cultural change in the country.
