Santana - 1973-03-07 - Charlotte, NC (SBD)

When Santana went on tour in early 1973, the band and their leader were both going through periods of change. The band's most recent album, Caravanserai, released in late 1973, was departure from Santana's earlier work. The album featured more of a jazz sound, as opposed to the mix of rock and salsa which highlighted prior albums. When the band finished recording the album, Gregg Rolie and Neil Schon both left the group, going off to launch Journey. In the wake of their departures, Carlos formed a new version of the band, with Armando Peraza and Chepito Areas on percussion, Doug Rauch on bass, Michael Shrieve on drums, and Tom Coster and Richard Kermode on keyboards. Santana's personal life also was in transition at this time. He married Deborah King, he daughter of the late blues singer and guitarist, Saunders King.  He and Deborah became disciples of Sri Chinmoy, an Indian philosopher and spiritualist. Carlos was given the spiritual name Devadip, meaning the lamp, light and eye of God. Further changes would come later in the decade, as Santana's music would evo;ve to having a more AOR sound. Through all the change, however, one thing remained constant, Santana's ability to light up a concert arena. That fact is evident in this soundboard recording from Charlotte on March 7, 1973, 40 years ago today. This show is just 4 months prior to the Japanese concerts that were recorded for the legendary live album, Lotus, and features a similar set list.
