Loggins & Messina – 1972-03-25 – New York, NY (SBD)

Jim Messina, formerly of Poco and Buffalo Springfield, was working as an independent record producer for Columbia Records in 1970 when he met Kenny Loggins, a little-known singer/songwriter who was signed to ABC Records. The two recorded a number of Loggins' compositions in Messina's home living room. Messina then helped Loggins negotiate a 6 album record deal with Columbia. Loggins began recording his debut album for Columbia in early 1971, with Messina serving as producer. By the time the album was completed, however, Messina had contributed so much to the album - in terms of songwriting, arrangement, instrumentation, and vocals - that his guest spot turned into a full time partnership with Loggins. After the release of the duo’s first album in November 1971, Loggins and Messina found themselves back in the studio on March 25, 1972, 43 years ago today, to cut a promotional album for CBS records. Mike Martin of Flying M Productions came across a vinyl copy of that promo disc, and digitally re-mastered it, removing countless pops and clicks. The resulting soundboard recording captures the birth of Loggins and Messina, including such classics as Danny's Song, House At Pooh Corner. Your Mama Don't Dance and Vahevalla.
