1960s - #5: This FM broadcast captures the Jefferson Airplane in Amsterdam on September 15, 1968, 53 years ago today but its more famous for what transpired with The Doors, who they were on tour with. On this night, Jim Morrison ingested far too many of the pills and narcotics found freely on the streets of the city. As a result, when the Airplane launched into Fantastic Plastic Lover, Morrison walked onstage and began dancing to the music. It wasn’t long before the drugs, the dancing, the music, well just about everything, hit him, and he toppled over, passed out. The Doors played their set later that night, sans Jim, with Ray Manzarek filling in on vocals.

thanks for this historic show speedy, stuff of true legend, do you happen to have the doors set with Ray on vocals ? the guy was amazing from what i understand he had to babysit Morrison and fill in for him on numorious occasions especially in the bands later years when Jim was getting more and more out of control, They actualy tried to continue as a group after Jims death and put out 2 albums that were pretty good, but broke up soon after that, Ray was really talented and could really belt out a song in his own right, guess the Morrison charisma and persona were an impossible thing to live up to

Thanks for the kind words. Yep - Ray was quite talented and did much to keep Jim in line and the Doors alive. Unfortunately, I don't have their set from this night.

a time when real music existed, unfortunaty i believe ray passed away recently.speedy can you confirm this? beleive he was performing to the end, was also a record producer
Ray passed away on May 20, 2013. According to pne source "At 9:31 on May 21, The Whisky a Go Go and other clubs where the Doors played, dimmed their lights in his memory"
Ray was the glue that held the band together, his organ gave them their signiture sound, they didnt need a base player because of his expertise with that instrument , Ray in interviews described Morrison as a man child with the emphasis on child, Without Ray the doors would have flamed out quickly as he was their undisputed leader. So sad he's gone a true legend in his own right, on another note have to sorta admire Grace for being true to her beliefs ,as some aging rockers do look pretty silly trying to sound and look 25 when many are in their 50s 60s and even 70s, the stones for example look and sound silly as do whats left of the Who , Have to also admire Robert Plant for refusing to jump on the Zep reunion bandwagon,as he realizes unlike Page that what they once were and had cant be recaptured and wont damage his legesy by getting back together for lots of cash, certain artists however age more gracefully than others While the Stones and the Who as well as the Beach Boys have become parodies of their former selves , others like McCartney , Elton John, Tom Petty , U2, John Fogerty , Neil Young , Jackson Browne ecc all still put on great shows, probably because they dont try to sound young and acccept aging and their material can be sung at any age, Face it who wants to see a 72 year old Mick Jagger jumping up and down to satisfaction , i saw them on their 72 us tour and have many boots of them in their late 60s early 70s heyday and their is no way for them to top that, same with the who, AC/DC, Sabbath. Kiss ecc, those groups have not aged well either, at least Plant chooses age appropriate music these days
I agree with the statement about aging rockers , however I would rather see and hear Mick Jagger and Robert Plant at any age even in wheel chairs pushing 90 than any of the mainstream crap today. The biggest concert draws today are still the old legends
do young people even go to concerts anymore ? too busy with their Iphones and Laptops listening to Miley Cyrus and watching her lipsynk to her silly porn routine onstage, sure am glad i grew up in the 60s and 70s and not today
Excuse me, but it'd be interesting to read about the Airplane performance, much as I love The Doors.
