In the Grateful Dead’s history after Jerry Garcia emerged from his 1986 coma, the most fun period was probably 1987, as every show was a celebration of life regained. I attended 8 Dead shows that year, including my only concert in California on May 10, the day after the Touch of Gray video was filmed; the July 12 concert with Bob Dylan at Giants Stadium; and my favorite all time show, on September 18, at Madison Square Garden. All 3 are posted on this blog along with several other shows from that year. That said, the band probably hit its performing peak in that era about 2 years later, from the summer of 1989 through the fall of 1991. That period includes numerous shows that the Dead have officially released including the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989; the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989; the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990; the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990; and the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990. A year later, in fall of 1991, this amazing 2 ½ year run culminated with 9 shows at Madison Square Garden, 6 at the Boston Garden and 5 in the San Francisco/Oakland area, including a tribute show on November 3 to mourn the death of Bill Graham. The 1991 MSG shows included a concert on September 10 with Branford Marsalis sitting in with the Dead, a show previously posted on this blog. That was not Branford’s first appearance, however, with the band. On March 29, 1990, 22 years ago today, Branford joined the Dead at the middle show of 3 nights at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, NY. Marsalis not only plays on Bird Song in the first set, but also joins the band for the entire second set, which kicks off with Eyes of The World, a song rarely played to open a set. Barnnford’s improvisational skills are on display throughout the night, especially as he and Jerry Garcia explore the far reaches of space during Dark Star. This soundboard recording captures every note of a show Deadbase ranks as the best of 1990.
