1968: In August 1968, Cream released the double album, Wheels of Fire, which went to the top of the charts in the US and reached the #3 position in the UK. The album included soon to be classics such as White Room and Born Under A Bad Sign, as well as an incredible live version of Crossroads. Despite the album’s commercial and critical success, Cream was on its last legs as a band. Lead guitarist Eric Clapton had grown tired of the psychedelic jamming that become Cream’s trademark and wanted to go in a new direction. He was heavily influenced at the time by The Band’s debut album, Music From Big Pink, with its simpler approach to songs that drew from such genres as folk, country and blues. Clapton was also tired of playing peace maker between bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. With all 3 members in agreement that the end had come, Cream launched a farewell tour, which consisted of 22 shows at 19 venues in the US between in October and November 1968, as well two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This soundboard recording captures one of those 2 RAH shows, on November 26, 1968, 49 years ago this very day.
