When Pink Floyd launched their Momentary Lapse of Reason tour in 1987 in support of the album of the same name, the band took to the road for the for the first time without Roger Waters, who had left the group 2 years earlier. The run was also their first set of live performances in 6 years, since the The Wall tour concluded in 1981. None of that seemed to bother the fans, who bought $135 million worth of tickets for 197 shows between the opening night of the Momentary Lapse of reason tour on September 9, 1987 and the closing show on July 18, 1989. On the next to last night of the run on July 15, 1988, 32 years ago today, Pink Floyd played on a floating stage set up in the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. Over 200,000 people attended the show, which was also broadcast live via Satellite TV to an audience of over 100 million in 23 countries. Pink Floyd was forced to make adjustments to their set list and to the timing of certain songs in order to have the concert fit precisely into the allotted TV time. The show almost never took place as The Superintendent of Monuments in Venice claimed that vibrations from the music could damage historic buildings. Pink Floyd had to promise to play at reduced volume in order to gain approval for the show. The city failed to provide appropriate facilities for the concert, resulting in 300 tons of litter and human waste that had to be cleared by the army. Afterward the entire city council resigned, but not before apologizing to the Venice residents and vowing no more such concerts would ever take place.
