It was the first major rock festival, hosting over 200,000 people over 3 days, with 90,000 fans in attendance at its peak on Sunday night. It was the place where Jimi Hendrix and The Who made their U.S. debuts. It marked the first major public appearances by Janis Joplin and Otis Redding. It embodied the counter culture spirit of San Francisco, with almost all the acts performing for free. It was the first multi-racial and multi-genre musical event. And it will ever be synonymous with the Summer of Love. It was officially, The Monterey International Pop Music Festival, better know simply as Monterey Pop. As part of this month's tribute to 1967, we're going to help you re-live that event over the next 3 days, capturing each of the festival's unique sessions. All of these are soundboard recordings! We start with this post of the Friday Evening session, featuring Simon & Garfunkel and The Animals, from June 16, 1967, a half century ago today.

Thanks for the great post, brother
Cheers for this (and these)!
I really have to commend you for this tremendous post! I've had a great bootleg for years of this event (somewhat rare, actually) on the Black Panther label out of Switzerland
(BPCD 040) - a 4CD set but by no means a full complete show - and to now have this series of posts - that is a super addition to my collection. Thanks so much. FREE THE MUSIC! Adam Dean
Great stuff! Thanks!
Aw poop... Rapidshare says your "File owner's public traffic exhausted."
Any chance of a re-up?

Going to be away for the holidays. I'll get new links after the new year
New links are up for all Monterey Pop posts.
The first night of the festival that changed pop music forever! This series of posts is a long-hoped-for reality! The whole set of 5 posts is a snapshot of pop music from 1967. Thanks for sharing these!
Thank you for the great post. I was to young to have anything to to do with this year (except my birth), but with each passing year I realize how much what happened that year as an effect on me today.
