Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood - 2009-06-13- Washington, DC (HQ Aud) 

2000s - #1: Few bands stayed together for less time, yet produced as lasting a legacy, as did Blind Faith. They recorded one album, which when released in August 1969, immediately went to #1 on the Billboard charts. They toured in support of the album that same month, the Blind Faith’s only live performances, except for their debut gig in Hyde Park in July we posted earlier this month. Since the group had less than an hour's worth of material, they also had to play tunes from Eric Clapton's days with Cream and Steve Winwood's time with Traffic. Eric was unhappy that the band seemed to be evolving into Cream, part 2, and by October, Blind Faith was no more. With the exception of 1973’s Rainbow Concert, Clapton and Winwood would not reunite for a live performance for almost 4 decades. Then, on May 19, 2007, about halfway through Winwood's set at the UK’s Country Side Rocks Festival, EC strolled on stage to recreate history. That night's collaboration was followed up by appearances together at Clapton's Crossroads festival in July 2007, 3 nights at Madison Square Garden in February 2008 and joint tours in 2009, 2010 & 2011. 1960s - #2 -  On June 11, 1964, The Beatles arrived in Australia for their first and only tour in the land down under. They were without Ringo, however, who was hospitalized in London with tonsillitis. Jimmy Nichol filled in for Ringo on drums for the first few stops on the tour. On June 12, The Beatles made their way to Adelaide, where over 300,000 people lined the streets to watch the band make the drive to their hotel! That night, exactly 48 years ago today, John, Paul, George and Jimmy played 2 shows at Centennial Hall in Adelaide. The first was taped for an FM broadcast the next day. This bootleg captures that FM broadcast, a unique moment in time when only 3 of the original 4 Beatles were on stage together. But don't despair Ringo fans - the download also includes 6 tracks from the June 17 show in Melbourne, by which time Richard Starkey had rejoined his band mates. Get this one and capture the Fab Four at a moment when Beatlemania was at its peak!

1990s - #3 - In March 1996, Sting released his 5th solo album, entitled Mercury Falling. The 11 song disc (which was only 10 in the US and Canada as the track, Twenty Five to Midnight was not included for some inexplicable reason) is considered by many fans as a transitional album for Sting, moving his music away from jazz oriented rock to a more adult contemporary sound. Critics also did not regard it as highly as his earlier records, nor as well as they would rate its follow up, Brand New Day. Nevertheless, Sting launched a world tour in support of the album, which would take him to 4 continents in 16 months. This FM broadcast captures him on June 8, 1996, 16 years ago today, at the Fleadh Festival near London. While 4 songs from the show were not included in the broadcast, we make up for that with 4 bonus tunes from his appearance on VH-1 storytellers about a month later on July 15. Download this one and judge for yourself how well the Mercury Falling material stacks up to Sting's other work.

1990s - #3 - In April 1996, Mark Knopfler, formerly of Dire Straits, went on the road in support of his debut solo album, Golden Heart, which he released on March 26 of that year. The tour encompassed 84 concerts in 66 cities, all in Europe, including this show on June 8, 1996, 16 years ago today, in Hamburg. Knopfler had disbanded Dire Straits in 1995, and the band’s last tour had been in 1992. His set list included several Dire Straits classics, such as Sultans of Swing, Romeo & Juliet, Money For Nothing and Walk of Life, but his focus was his new solo material. In fact, as the years have passed, Knopfler’s solo tours have drawn less and less on his Dire Straits heritage. Download this soundboard recording to hear Knopfler as he takes his first steps as a solo artist.

Bob Dylan - 1988-06-07 - Concord, CA (SBD) 

1980s - #1: In May 1988, Bob Dylan released Down In The Groove, his 25th studio album. While the disc did not receive good reviews, nor sell particularly well, Dylan launched a summer tour in support of the album. When he took the stage on June 7, 1988, 24 years ago today in Concord, CA for the first show of that tour, fans immediately noticed a dramatic shift. Where in recent years, Dylan’s live shows often featured collaborations with high-profile artists such as Mick Taylor, the Grateful Dead, and Tom Petty, the 1988 tour centered around a small, 'garage rock'-type combo, consisting of guitarist G.E. Smith , bassist Kenny Aaronson, and drummer Christopher Parker. Influenced by his time with the Grateful Dead, Dylan’s set list became more adventurous during this tour, with song selection varying dramatically from show to show. He also began to incorporate more traditional cover songs into the set lists. For Dylan, this show would be the start of what is now known as the Never Ending Tour, which is 27 years and almost 2700 shows strong as of June 2015. 1990s - #1: On May 20, 1997, John Fogerty released the album Blue Moon Swamp, his first studio recording in 11 years. The disc climbed to #37 on the Billboard charts and certified gold. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review and in 1998, it won a Grammy for best Rock Album. After years out of the spotlight, John Fogerty was back. He went on tour in support of the album the same month it was released. In December 1997, he recorded a live album, Premonition, then continued to tour well into 1998 in support of both discs. This soundboard recording captures Fogerty on June 3, 1997, 15 years ago today, during the early part of his tour.

1960s - #1 - From April 30 to May 10, 1965, Bob Dylan played 8 shows in England, which renowned filmmaker D. A. Pennebaker captured for the documentary feature Don’t Look Back. The opening scene of that film is the famous sequence in which Dylan displays and discards a series of cue cards featuring selected words and phrases from the lyrics of Subterranean Homesick Blues. That segment is often called a precursor to the music videos made famous by MTV in the 1980s. Dylan played only acoustic music during the tour, and was hailed as a a hero of the folk rock movement. A few weeks after the end of the tour, on June 1, 1965, 48 years ago today, Dylan recorded and filmed 12 acoustic tunes for BBC Television at the Shepards Bush studios in London. That session was broadcast in 2 parts, the first on June 19 and the second on June 26. Ironically, just about a month after that 2nd program aired, Dylan went electric at the Newport Folk festival, shocking the world and changing rock music forever. Download this FM recording, therefore, to hear one of Dylan’s last performances before that historic moment in Newport.
