1960s - #1 - From April 30 to May 10, 1965, Bob Dylan played 8 shows in England, which renowned filmmaker D. A. Pennebaker captured for the documentary feature Don’t Look Back. The opening scene of that film is the famous sequence in which Dylan displays and discards a series of cue cards featuring selected words and phrases from the lyrics of Subterranean Homesick Blues. That segment is often called a precursor to the music videos made famous by MTV in the 1980s. Dylan played only acoustic music during the tour, and was hailed as a a hero of the folk rock movement. A few weeks after the end of the tour, on June 1, 1965, 48 years ago today, Dylan recorded and filmed 12 acoustic tunes for BBC Television at the Shepards Bush studios in London. That session was broadcast in 2 parts, the first on June 19 and the second on June 26. Ironically, just about a month after that 2nd program aired, Dylan went electric at the Newport Folk festival, shocking the world and changing rock music forever. Great post,Bob at a crossroads of his career, saw don't look back , great documentary with footage of Bob with Donovan, Joan Baez to name a few , you could almost smell the pot from watching the footage and as you know when he returned to the UK in 1966 and performed electric sets it got even more bizzare . Why cant music be as good as it was back down, I know I sound like an old fart but it really was better back then unlike today when everything sounds artificial,computerized and phony, Thanks for all that you do with your great blog to allow people who were actually young back then to relive their youth. Sure glad I was young back then as opposed to today. Feel sorry for young people today who will never experience what we did back then. Thanks a bunch

wonderful post and insightful comments, when did music change for the worse, ask yourself this , are there any artists today that will be considered legendary in 40 or 50 years like Bob. the beatles , the who . led zep ,the stones, U2 Neil Young ecc the list goes on and on far too many great ones to name in this comment section , some say it was MTV that changed things, Im in my 50s and as a kid in the 60s and a very young man in the 70s every time I turned on the radio something great would be playing beatles. beach boys , stones ,supremes, Elton,Led Zep,ecc, not like that today of course , Music of today at least on the radio no great lead guitar or singers that can carry a tune just vulgar hip hop crap and American idol rejects UGH and that's just music don't get me started on tv programs and movies as most of the current stuff out today is crap as well,no wonder society has plummeted to where it is today, I would be curious if anyone else shares my opinions , anyway thanks speedy for doing your part to help us oldtimers remember a much better time. been reading the comments. totally agree, in 30 to 50 years weve gone from the beatles to bieber. even black music , from stevie wonder to jay z Motown to hip hop ecc, movies too , the godfather to fast and ferious , will music and film ever be as good as before, unfortunately no because with todays media anybody can become famous unlike back then when you actually had to have talent to succeed.

Great post Speedy, Agree with most of the comments about the state of modern music film ecc, no need to add any more,was hoping you could shed some light on two things, thought that Bobs 65 uk tour ended in mid may of 65, this post says june. was it a special performance and was it live in front of an audience as it says shepards bush studio, hear audience reaction which is why I assumed it was live, also have there been any more problems with the good ole web sheriff , other blogs have been complaining about him again , please respond and thank you for your great blog.
You're correct - tour ended in Mid May. Sorry if I was unclear. These shows were taped June 21, about 2 weeks after the tour ended. yes this was recorded live, but not sure if there was an audience in the studio. And, fortunately, Web Sheriff has not bothered me lately - lets hope it stays that way! Thanks for the kind words and your interest!
I like to believe there will be great music again...it will be under appreciated at first and when it bursts into the mainstream people will say they don't know if they like it ? Hopefully it wil be in our lifetime. Rock On !
when people like Justin bieber , lil wayne and similar no talent vulgar people can dominate the pop yes I said pop charts , that speaks more to the dumbing down of society than their obvious lack of talent. Was looking at a billboard top ten from a certain week in 1970, it had let it be by the beatles and bridge over troubled water by simon and Garfunkel both in the top ten in the same freeking week. the rest of the top ten included American woman by the guess who as well as songs by credence,the supremes,and I believe Johnny Cash had a song in the list as well,in the mid 60s you regularly had the beatles,beach boys , stones,Simon and Garfunkel ,Supremes in the top ten in a given week along with many other talented artists, Unfortunatly I don't feel you will ever see that again because we live in too much of a fast paced society where we don't pardon my analogy sip and savor the wine , instead we drink it down in one gulp.Same with movies and tv, watch most movies and tv from the 60s or 70s. and what did most of them have, why a story of course with actors who could actually act and intelligent diologhe that you had to actually pay attention to. unlike to day when all you have are computerized redundant action scenes and sexually offensive material that you don't want your kids to see. I would like to think it would change for the better but as long as society accepts what is now out there then it wont. The 60s and 70s were a time unfortunately at least when it comes to music and possibly film that will never come close to being duplicated. The way things are today really makes you appreciate those times if you were there back then. Thanks a lot
wow, what passion one insightful comment can stir up, I also agree with the above comments, i'll put in my two cents worth,the problem as I see it is that like me, the rest of the people complaining about todays music and film,tv,ecc are at least 45 or older. maybe some in their 60s,As was the case back then when we were young,todays young people are the ones being catered too by the record industry,same with tv and the movies. If the crap out there wasn't profitable then better stuff might still exist. If you werean artist with talent who wanted to release quality material,the record companies would not let you in the door because as I see it the masses want to listen to this crap {music} if you want to call it that and watch these mindless movies/tv and dumb reality shows.A Justin Beiber or a Lil Wayne and countless similar no talent media creations wouldn't have existed in the 60s or 70s because the standards were higher back then. Today kids are graduating high school that cant even read properly. So unfortunately its about the young people of today, not all but most of them want the crap that's out there and the companies /music/tv/movies are giving the dumbasses what they want.Will it ever go back to how it was,i hope so but am not optimistic. These mental midgets will be the parents of the next generation so who knows how bad it will bee in 20 more years.
