On September 1, 1988, when Eric Clapton launched a 26 date North American tour, he was accompanied by another guitarist of some note. Mark Knopfler, on a break from Dire Straits, backed EC throughout the tour, a rare case of one artist putting aside his ego to perform one another musician that he admired. Knopfler did step out front once each night, during the encores, to play Money For Nothing from his days with Dire Straits. This soundboard captures EC with a little help from Knopfler on September 7, 1988, 26 years ago today, in Philadelphia. Van Morrison - 1971-09-05 - Sausalito, CA (FM)

On September 5, 1971, 43 years ago today and just about 2 weeks before he was to play at Winterland in San Francisco, Van Morrison recorded a live set at Pacific High Studios in Sausalito CA. The show, in front of an audience of around 200 people, was broadcast on KSAN-FM, and, according to some sources, was originally intended to be released as a live album. In addition to playing cuts from his earlier albums, Van also sang 2 songs from his soon to be released disc Tupelo Honey, Wild Nights and the title track. That album was actually recorded during the spring and summer of 1971 in San Francisco, so the Pacific High show was the perfect venue for their live debut. Neil Young - 1989-09-04 - Saratoga Springs, NY (HQ Aud)

On September 6, 1989, I got to see Neil Young live for the first time. Neil was in the midst of an acoustic tour, so it made sense that he would pick a smaller, more intimate venue for his NY area shows. He selected the Palladium, on 14th Street, which at first glance, seemed to make a great deal of sense. The Palladium, which held about 3000 people, had long been a favorite concert location in NY due to its size and outstanding sound system. The Clash and U2 made their US debuts at the venue. Bruce Springsteen, in the midst of his first arena tour in 1978, played 3 nights at the Palladium so he could be closer to his audience. So, it seemed like the perfect place for Neil’s show, except for one small problem. In 1985, the Palladium had been converted into a nightclub by the former owners of Studio 54. All the seats were removed and a huge second floor balcony was installed overlooking the dance floor. There was no real stage to speak of. The idea of Neil Young playing acoustic rock and roll in a disco seemed ironic at best, ludicrous at worst. Upon learning there were no seats in the building, one of my buddies refused to go, stating, “you know you’re getting old when you need to sit down at a concert or a bar”. It was his loss, because, somehow, Neil pulled it off. Despite having to lean over the balcony and look around poles to see him, I was amazed by Neil’s ability to mesmerize an audience with his singing and playing. From the opening My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue) to the heartfelt The Needle and The Damage Done to a still defiant Ohio, Neil was in outstanding form. This year, we’ll bring you 2 other shows from that tour starting with this high quality audience recording from Saratoga Springs on September 4, 1989, a quarter century ago today. Rolling Stones - 1989-09-03 - Toronto (SBD) 

I saw the Stones for the first (and only) time on October 11, 1989 at Shea Stadium. My sister, her boyfriend (soon to be husband!), some friends and I made the trek from Manhattan via the 7 train to Shea for the 2nd of 2 nights in NY of the Steel Wheels tour. The Stones hadn't toured in the US since 1981, a stretch of 8 years. During that time, stories had abounded that the tension between Jagger and Richards might lead to the end to the band. So, fans were relieved that the Glimmer Twins had resolved their issues and fired up that the Stones were returning to the stage. Unfortunately, I can't really tell you if the show lived up to expectations. You see, it's tough to pay attention to the music when you're afraid a stadium may collapse around you! We were in the upper deck at Shea, and the minute the Stones hit the stage with Start Me Up (quite appropriate), we all stood up. And the minute we stood up, well, the entire upper deck began to sway. At times, it felt like the floor just dropped away beneath your feet. That continued the entire night! How that building remained standing for almost another 20 years is beyond me. I only ventured back to that building one other time after that, for the Last Play At Shea, a story I've detailed in an earlier post. In any event, while I've never come across a recording of the show I attended, I do have this soundboard recording from September 3, 1989, 25 years ago today, in Toronto. Welcome to part 2 of our 1995 Bruce Hornsby Same Tour, Different Show entry. A night after his poignant performance at the Rock & Roll hall of Fame concert, Bruce Hornsby played 2 dozen songs in Wilkes Barre, PA. This concert again reflected the impact that the loss of Garcia had on Hornsby, as he filled the show with Grateful Dead songs, including Sugaree, Wharf Rat, He’s Gone and the final song on the night, a version of the Dead’s traditional encore, Brokedown Palace. This soundboard captures every note of Bruce’s tribute to Jerry on September 3, 1995, 19 years ago today.

Bruce Hornsby - 1995-09-02 - Cleveland, OH (SBD)

On September 2, 1995, 19 years ago today, Cleveland Stadium hosted a rock & roll extravaganza to celebrate the opening of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Bruce Springsteen and Chuck Berry got the night started with a duet of Johnny B. Goode. By the time the final note sound at 2:10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3, 1995, 41 different combinations of artists had taken the Stadium stage, playing 68 songs over the course of six hours and 40 minutes. The lineup, in addition to Bruce & Chuck, featured a host of stars who would soon be enshrined in the Hall, including Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, James Brown, Bob Dylan, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, James Brown, John Fogerty, Robbie Robertson, and the Allman Brothers Band, just to name a few. Bruce Hornsby also performed that night, playing a set that reflected the loss of his brother in music, Jerry Garcia, less than a month earlier. All 3 songs were from his time with the Grateful Dead, including a Terrapin Station without words, and I Know You Rider without its partner China Cat Sunflower, symbolizing that a piece of Hornsby was gone with the passing of Garcia.
