Paul McCartney - 1990-07-04 - Washington, DC (SBD)

Since 1993, I've seen Sir Paul 6 times, and will make it 7 in just a few weeks when my wife, my twin boys, and I go to see him on August 7 at Met Life Stadium.  It will be the 2nd Macca show for my sons, whose first concert was Paul at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia when we went as a family for Father's Day in 2015!

Today's post goes back to a tour I missed unfortunately. In 1989, when Paul McCartney launched his first world tour since his days with Wings, he carefully selected the date for his concert in Washington, DC. On July 4, 1990, 23 years ago today, Sir Paul played RFK Stadium in our nation’s capitol, helping the US celebrate the 214th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately, this soundboard recording of that show is missing the first 4 songs. The result, however, is that the recording starts with a song that McCartney added to the set list specifically for this particular concert. That tune was a rendition of Birthday, an appropriate choice for July 4th in the US!

Rolling Stones - 1995-07-03 - Paris, France (SBD)

I've recounted the tale of the one time I saw the Stones in October 1989 on several occasions. Let me just say it involved being far more worried about the upper deck at Shea Stadium collapsing than listening to what the Stones were playing!

This post goes forward to 1994, when The Stones released the album Voodoo Lounge, their first album since Steel Wheels, 5 years earlier. It was also their first album on Virgin Records, and the first without Bill Wyman. Voodoo Lounge met with critical acclaim, as many writers called it a return to the glory days of Exile on Main Street and Some Girls. The disc rose to #2 on the charts in the US and won the Grammy for best rock album. This soundboard recording captures the band near the end of their year long tour in support of Voodoo Lounge in Paris on July 3 1995, 21 years ago today.

Stephen Stills - 1979-07-02 - New York, NY (FM)

The only time I saw Stephen Stills solo (I saw him 6 times with CSN & once with CSNY) was on July 7, 1979 at the Garden State Arts center (now the PNC Bank Arts Center thanks to the wonderful world of corporate sponsorship) I was 20 years old, in the summer between my sophomore and junior years in college. For all of us, summer was about 3 things - girls, beer and concerts. Especially beer and concerts since the drinking age was 18 back then! The Stills show marked the start of a run of 4 concerts in 3 weeks, as the next day we headed off to Belmont Race Track to see Blondie and Rockpile. Then, the next 2 Saturdays, July 14 and July 21, we saw Jorma Kaukonen in Asbury Park and the Allman Brothers at Madison Square Garden. This FM broadcast captures Stills 5 days earlier on July 2, 1979, 37 years ago today, from the Wollman Rink in New York.

My lovely bride is a huge Billy Joel fan, sO we've seen him 5 times with a 6th show forthcoming in October 2016 at Madison Square Garden.  In fact, the first concert we saw together when we started dating was Billy at Yankee Stadium in June 1990.

This high quality audience tape captures the 4th time we saw Billy, during the first year of his now 3 years long, 1 show a month residency at Madison Square Garden, on July 2, 2014, just 2 years ago today.

Robert Cray - 2000-07-01 - Bellinzona, Switzerland (FM)

Robert Cray is one of a handful of artists that I saw perform as both a an opening act and a headliner. In April 1987, he led-in for Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden, and even joined Slowhand on stage during the encores. Later that year, in August, I saw Cray at Pier 84, a concert where John Hiatt served as his lead in act.

This FM Broadcast captures Cray in Switzerland on July 1, 2000, 16 years ago today.

I've seen the Allman Brothers live twice - once in July 1979 right before their early 1980s break up and then again in October 1986 at the Crackdown on Crack concert with CSN and Santana.  Both shows were at Madison Square Garden.
