How could you have a month dedicated to guitar gods and not have a huge jam session. Well, we couldn't so this soundboard recording captures the final All Star jam at the Fillmore West on July 3, 1971, 46 years ago today.Guitarists on stage included Santana, Mike Bloomfield and John Cippolina. Some sources also believe that Jorma Kaukonen may have participated, though that's never been officially confirmed. His partner in Hot Tuna Jack Casady was part of the jam, as was Van Morrison and Greg Rolle.  Crank this one up loud.

When Carlos Santana took the stage on closing night at the Fillmore West on July 4, 1971, 46 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording, he had already earned the title of Guitar God. Santana's incendiary performance at Woodstock in August 1969 had made him a legend before his band had even sold a single record. Over the years, is playing has incorporated such diverse styles as latin, african, blues, AOR, jazz,  and fusion. Rolling Stone recognized his immense skills on both their lists of the top 100 guitarist of all time, ranking Carlos 15th on the 2003 list and 20th on 2011 one.

Way back on the 195th birthday of the United States, on July 4, 1971, 46 years ago today. Bill Graham closed the legendary Fillmore West in San Francisco. That closing concert featured Tower Of Power, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Santana and an All Star Jam featuring a host of musicians from San Francisco. As part of our Guitar Gods theme, we'll bring you the last 3 performances from that night, starting with this soundboard recording of CCR's set. Of course, Creedence front man John Fogerty is one of rock's legendary guitarists, whose distinctive style and sound created the genre now known as Swamp Rock. Rolling Stone ranked Fogerty 40th on its 2003 list of rock's greatest guitarist, though it somehow left him off the 2011 version of that ranking. Regardless, Fogerty;s playing, singing and writing has earned him his place as a Guitar God.

The Byrds - 1970-07-04 - Rotterdam, Netherlands (FM)

When folks think of The Byrds, their first thoughts are usually of the distinctive sound of Roger McGuinn's 12 string.  McGuinn has gotten some recognition for his guitar prowess, ranking at #95 on Rolling Stone's 2011 list of the top guitarists of l time.  His band mate, though during The Byrd's live hey day from late 1969 through 1972, Clarence White, is often overlooked by casual fans. Rolling Stone, however, ranked White at #41 and #52, respectively, on its 2003 and 2011 lists of the greatest rock guitarists of ll time. This springboard recording, courtesy of our friends at Rockin-Byrd, captures McGuinn, White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin  live in Rotterdam on July 4, 1970, 47 years ago this very day.

Neil Young – 1993-07-03 – Torhout, Belgium (SBD)

If there’s one thing for certain about Neil Young, it’s that you never know what he’ll do next. The early 1990’s provide a perfect example. In 1990 and 1991, Neil was in full scale attack mode, playing blistering guitar lines on the studio album Ragged Glory, and the live album Weld, which documented his 1990 tour. Then, in 1992, he reverted to his acoustic roots, releasing the majestic Harvest Moon, one of the finest albums of his career. The next year, Neil moved in yet another direction, launching a tour with legendary R&B artists, Booker T and the MGs. Of course, that collaboration meant that not one but two Guitar Gods were on stage simultaneously - Neil and Steve Cropper. Cropper ranked #36 and #39 respectively on Rolling Stone's 2 top 100 guitar lists.  Cropper is also famous for being part of the Blues Brothers band backing John Belushi and Dan Akroyd.  This soundboard captures Neil with Booker T and the MGs on July 3, 1993, 2 dozen years ago today, in Belgium at the Torhout Rock Festival.  By the way, during the Neil/Booker T tour, ,on some of the stops Pearl Jam jumped in to play the encore with Neil, a preview of the full scale collaboration between those 2 bands that would transpire in 1995 with the release of the album Mirror Ball.

Pink Floyd – 1977-07-02 – Madison Square Garden, NY (HQ Aud)

Rolling Stone's 2 lists of the the top 100 guitarists (yes, they did  the rankings twice - once in 2003 and agian in 2011 - with so many differences between the 2 that it casts doubt in the merits of either - but that's a tale for another pots) has David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, ranked #82 and #14 respectively (further emphasizing my point about the ridiculous disparity in the 2 lists).  Digital Dream door also has him at #14 on their list of the best guitarists ever.  Rock fans don't need any lists to know gilmour is a Guitar God.  This post captures Gilmour and Pink Floyd at a time when fellow band mate Roger Water’s was not in the best of moods. Nor, does it appear, based on some articles I read recently, that he was in the best of health during the band's 1977 spring tour. All that combined to make many stops on the tour tumultuous affairs, to say the least. The 4-night stand at Madison Square Garden from July 1 to July 4, over the Independence Day weekend, was no exception. Waters snapped at the audience at every show, especially, and rightfully so, to be candid, when the crowd set off fireworks inside the 20,000 seat arena. Polite announcements to please refrain from using fireworks were met by even more explosions. Gilmour’s response to the unauthorized pyrotechnics was simply to crank up the amps even louder. Despite all the incidents, the band performed exceptionally well all 4 nights in New York. Audience recordings are available for each of the shows, but it seems that this bootleg, from the July 2, 1977 performance, 4 decades ago this very day, is the best sounding by far of the bunch. John Hiatt - 2000-07-01 - Bayfield WI (SBD)

As we mentioned in our post announcing this month's theme of Guitar Gods, in addition to bringing you shows featuring the likes of Eric Clapton & Jimi Hendrix, we also will try to feature some guitar virtuosos who may not get quite as much attention.  Our first post this month is a perfect example of that and I'm not referring to John Hiatt. Rather, I'm talking about a member of Hiatt's backing band, the Goners, namely the one and only Sonny Landreth.  While many folks may not be familiar with Landreth's skills on the guitar, other rock legends are.  Clapton, for example  invited him to play at his Crossroads Guitar Festivasl in 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013  In addition to backing Hiatt, Landreth has also done session work with Gov't Mule, Mark Knopler, and Marshall Crenshaw. This soundboard recording captures Landreth backing Hiatt on July 1, 2000, 17 years ago today. By the way.Hiatt clearly knows how to find a goo d guitarist when he needs one.  In addition to Landreth, Haitt worked with Ry Cooder in the mid 1980s on his breakthrough album, Bring The Family.
