Neville Brothers - 1986-11-04 - Tokyo, Japan (FM)

I only have seen the Neville Brothers live in concert on one occasion - on July 10, 1989 when they sat in during the 2nd set with the Grateful Dead!  My seats were so far away from the stage that I initially thought the folks who joined the Dead on stage that night were Los Lobos, who had led in. Only when I read the concert review in the paper the next day did I learn it was the Nevilles!

This FM broadcast captures the Nevilles about a year before I saw them,,in Tokyo on November 4, 1986.

Elton John - 2004-11-04 - Atlanta GA (SBD) 

As I've discussed on several occasions on this blog, my very first concert was Elton John at Madison Square Garden on August 15, 1976. That show was the inspiration for my book,TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT: AN ORDINARY GUY'S LIFETIME OF LIVE ROCK & ROLL. Since then, I've seen him 5 more times, all at The World's Most Famous Arena, including:

1. a performance in 1992 during his The One tour, 
2. a outstanding solo show in October 1999, 
3. a 30th anniversary tribute to the Captain Fantastic album in September 2005, 
4. his 60th birthday concert, which was also his 60th concert at MSG, in March 2007 
5. and a concert in November 2018 during his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.. 

Elton is one of those rare artists, like Paul McCartney, where you can attend a show, hear 30 great tunes, and still make a list of #1 hits and classics he didn't play! (case in point - the last time I saw Elton he didn't play Honky Cat, Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word,  or Captain Fantastic, just to name 3!).

This soundboard recording captures Sir Elton in Atlanta on November 4, 2004, 19 years ago today, and just a few days before the release of the Peachtree Road album. The show was a fitting site for the debut performances of songs from that disc, since not only were parts of the album recorded in Atlanta, but also the disc is named after a street in the city near of one Elton's homes.  By the way, when I saw Elton in September 2005, in addition to playing about 8 songs from the Captain Fantastic album, he played about the same number from Peachtree Road, not to mention 15 of his greatest hits!  NOTE - this link is a test a a site called gofile - let me know how that works!

Believe it or not, I've been to 3 concerts by the Go Gos - once in November 1981 at the Palladium, the just a few months later in January 1982 at Madison Square Garden as the lead-in band for The Police, and then, some 18 years later in July 2000 at the PNC Bank Arts Center sharing the bill with the B52s!  What can I say - its a guilty pleasure!  When you listen to their first two albums - Beauty & The Beat, released in 1981 which went to #2 on the Billboard charts, and Vacation, released in 1982 which went to #8 on the charts, you simply want to get up and dance. As Nick Lowe would say, its pure pop for now people!  This FM Broadcast captures The Go Gos at their peak, headling the Roickplast on November 3, 1982, 41 years ago today.

Bruce Cockburn - 1984-11-02 - Park West, Chicago. Il (FM)

I saw Bruce Cockburn as the lead in band for Bob Weir in the summer of 1992. Cockburn also joined Weir during the encore of The Weight. The show was part of the Meadowlands Summer Fest series of concerts, which believe it or not, took place in the PARKING LOT of Giants stadium. The ever resourceful John Scher, a promoter who never let anything stand in the way of making a buck, through up a stage and some retractable stands in the lot, put a fence around it, and lo and behold, created a concert venue! In any event, this FM broadcast captures Cockburn at the height of his commerical Success, in Chicago, on November 2, 1984, 39 years ago today.

I've seen Willie Nelson live on one occasion, in September 1978 when he led in for the Grateful Dead. Actually, it was supposed to be Waylon Jennings and Willie, but the former no showed the concert. Willie didn't let that stop him from getting us fired up for the main event with a perfromance as hot at the weather that day.

This soundboard recording captures Willie at the 5th Annual Bridge School concert, on November 2, 1991, 32 years ago today, supporting his fellow Farm Aid founder, Neil Young.

Rolling Stones - 2014-11-01 - Perth, Austalia (IEM)

I've only seen the Stones once, in October 1989 at Shea Stadium, during their Steel Wheels tour, which is fine as one near death expereince per life time is more than enough.  As I've noted sevral times on this blog, it was hard to concentrate on the music as the upper deck swayed uncontrollanly throughout te show, lkeaving us convinced it was going to go crashing down into the levels below it at any moment! That the stadium stood for another 20 years before they tore it down is a miracle.

This IEM recording captures the Stones in Pert, Australia, on November 1, 2014, 9 years ago today,. They get some help on guitar on 2 songs form former Stone, Mick Taylor.

Grateful Dead - 1977-11-01 - Detroit, MI (SBD)

We open November with a show from the band I saw live most often, from the very year I attended my first of 50 of their concerts. On September 3, 1977, me, my buddies and, along with 150,000 others, made the pilgrimage to Englishtown NJ, to see the Grateful Dead play the largest concert in the state's history. The day was hot - over 100 degrees - and the band was even hotter. Another performance that added to the legend of 1977. I would see 49 more after that, at least 1 show every year except 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1992, with the last show being June 18, 1995, just 2 month's before we lost Jerry Garcia. My long strange trip with the Dead was short compared to folks who saw hundreds of concerts, but it was memorable, as over a dozen shows that I attended were good enough to be officially released. It's been 28 years since we lost Jerry, and I still miss the magic. 

Speaking of magic, here's another one from 1977, aa concert just 2 months after Englistown. As the fall tour wound to a close in November, the band was still in peak form, as evidenced by the fact that the November 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th shows were all officially released. Today, we bring you a soundboard from November 1, 1977, 46 years ago today, in Detroit.
