U2 2019- Back To Back - #1: In 1987, U2 released the album the Joshua Tree, a disc which put the band on the cover of Time Magazine, just the 4th rock and roll act at that time to ever achieve that distinction. Three decades later, U2 went on tour to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their landmark disc. Each concert on the tour found the band playing the Joshua Tree album in its entirety, which marked the first ever live performances of the tune Red Hill Mining Town. After the original portion of the tour, which encompassed cocerts in North America, South America, and Europe, ended in October 2017, U2 annopunced an extntion of the tour in 2019 that would visit Oceania and Asia This IEM recording captures them during that run, in Japan on December 4, 2019, 4 years ago today. JGB 1983 - Back To Back- #1: In November 1982, Jerry Garcia would release his last solo studio album, entitled Run For The Roses. With the exception of the title track, and a cover of Dylan’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, it was hardly Garcia’s most inspired work. In part, that reflected his ongoing battles with drug addiction. It also reflected a growing disinterest on his part in making studio albums in general. For example, the Grateful Dead would go 7 years, from 1980 to 1987 without releasing a studio album. Even that 1987 album, In The Dark, was recorded on stage in a theater, though without an audience, in hopes of giving the tunes more of a live concert feel. Playing live was, ironically, both Garcia’s comfort zone and his experimental playground. In 1983, he played 75 solo shows, in addition to touring with the Dead, but unlike most bands, the concerts weren’t designed to promote a newly released album. For example, at this show from the Tower Theatre on December 2, 1983, 4 decades ago this very day, only the title track made it into the set list. Cover songs abounded, however, including How Sweet It Is, The Harder They Come and Tangled Upn Blue. Download this sounboard recording, the come back tomorrow (Twice!) and the next day for the next 3 installments in this Back To Back set.

Jorma Kaukonen - 1985-12-01 - Chicago IL  (early) (SBD)

Jorma 1985 - Back To Back - #1: In 1979, Jorma Kaukonen, legendary guitarist for the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, flirted with punk and new wave music, forming a band called Vital Parts, covering his body with tattoos and cutting his hair and dying it orange and purple. Fortunately, after a few years, Jorma came to his senses and went back to doing what he did best, playing rock and roll, especially acoustic guitar.  In 1985, he reunited with Jack Casady to reform Hot Tuna. Also that year, he released a solo acoustic album, Too Hot To Handle, and went on tour in support of that disc. This soundboard recording captures him during that tour at the early show on December 1, 1985, 38 years ago today in Chicago, where's he joined by the one and only David Bromberg.  Downlaod this one, the come back later today for the 2nd part of this Back To Back Set
