JGB 1983 - Back To Back- #1: In November 1982, Jerry Garcia would release his last solo studio album, entitled Run For The Roses. With the exception of the title track, and a cover of Dylan’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, it was hardly Garcia’s most inspired work. In part, that reflected his ongoing battles with drug addiction. It also reflected a growing disinterest on his part in making studio albums in general. For example, the Grateful Dead would go 7 years, from 1980 to 1987 without releasing a studio album. Even that 1987 album, In The Dark, was recorded on stage in a theater, though without an audience, in hopes of giving the tunes more of a live concert feel. Playing live was, ironically, both Garcia’s comfort zone and his experimental playground. In 1983, he played 75 solo shows, in addition to touring with the Dead, but unlike most bands, the concerts weren’t designed to promote a newly released album. For example, at this show from the Tower Theatre on December 2, 1983, 4 decades ago this very day, only the title track made it into the set list. Cover songs abounded, however, including How Sweet It Is, The Harder They Come and Tangled Upn Blue.
