1990s - #1: On May 20, 1997, John Fogerty released the album Blue Moon Swamp, his first studio recording in 11 years. The disc climbed to #37 on the Billboard charts and certified gold. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review and in 1998, it won a Grammy for best Rock Album. After years out of the spotlight, John Fogerty was back. He went on tour in support of the album, which included a stop in Tingley Park for the annual Farm Aid festival.  This FM broadcast captues that Farm Aid appearance on October 4, 1997, 27 years ago today.

John Hiatt - 1988-10-04 - Boston, MA (FM)

1980s - #1: In August 1988, John Hiatt released the album Slow Turning, his follow up to his 1987 breakout album, Bring The Family. Hiatt is backed on the album by the Goners: Sonny Landreth on guitar, Dave Ranson on bass and Kenneth Blevins on drums. The album contains some of Hiatt’s best know tunes, including Drive South, Tennessee Plates, Feels Like Rain and the title track. The single Slow Turning received significant airplay and has several notable lines. The chorus of “not fade way’ echoes the Buddy Holly song of the same name, while the line “never did get what I wanted but now I get what I need” is reminiscent of a line from the Stone’s You Can’t Always get What You Want. Speaking of the Stones, Slow Turning also features the lyric “I'm yelling at the kids in the back, 'cause they're banging like Charlie Watts”. I’ve said it in other posts but it’s worth repeating here – John Hiatt is a vastly under rated singer/songwriter. This FM broadcast captures Hiatt in Boston on October 10, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today, on tour in support of Slow Turning.  NOTE - while the source says FM, its a bit muted so its possible it could be an audience recording.

Linda Ronstadt - 1977-10-03 - Los Angeles, CA (Ex Aud) 

1970s - #1: For Linda Ronstadt, the year 1977 began by being featured on the cover of Time Magazine on February 28. For any rock artist to make the cover of Time was a major event, for a woman to do it was historic. She ended the year still on top of the rock world, with the release of the album Simple Dreams. The disc spent 5 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts. Two singles from the album, Blue Bayou at #2 and It's So Easy at #5, were both in the Billboard Top 5 at the same time, making Ronstadt the first female artist to accomplish that feat. The album also included Poor Poor Pitiful Me, written by Warren Zevon, and a cover of the Rolling Stones’ Tumbling Dice. Simple Dreams was Ronstadt's fifth consecutive Platinum album, selling over 3½ million copies in less than a year in the United States alone. This excellent audience recording from legendary taper Mike Millard captures Ronstadt on tour in support of Simple Dreams on October 3, 1977, 47 years ago today, in Los Angeles, one of 12 sold out nights in the City of Angels.

2000s - #1: In 2003, Steely Dan took to the road for the 3rd time in 10 years, having also toured in 1993 and 2000. For a band that went almost 2 decades without playing live (from 1975 to 1993), going on the road now seemed common place, The tour was in support of the album Everything Must Go, released in June 2003, which at this point, is the last studio album from the band. Seems ironic that in the latter portion of their career, roles reversed, with touring taking precedence over studio work.  In any event, this soundboard captures the band on October 2, 2003, 21 years ago today, in Los Angeles. The set list featured 2 songs from the new album, but primarily consisted of classic Steely Dan cuts, though neither Do It Again nor Reelin’ In The Years is included.

Frank Sinatra - 1960-10-02 - Maui, HI (SBD)

1960s - #1: On October 2, 1960, 64 years ago today, Frank Sintara perfromed a fund rasing concert for John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign (Note - some sources say this was on October 12). Sinatra was in Hawaii at the time shooting the movie The Devil at Four O'Clock.  In  response to criticism from Republican candidate for the House of Representatives, Frederick Titcomb who claimed show business people were making a farce out of serious politics, Frank defended the right of entertainers to campaign for their political convictions. Sinatra responed that  "The Hearst papers throughout the nation are campaigning for Nixon and throwing a lot of propaganda in. If this organization of newspapers can do it, then why shouldn't I just by singing? I've been campaigning for Democrats ever since I marched in a parade for Al Smith when I was a 12-year-old kid."  Interestingly, Sinatra would also campiagn for Demcrat Hubert Humphey in 1968, but in the 1980s raised funds for Republican Ronald Regan.

2020s - #2:  On September 30, 2022, Elvis Costello played a concert at the Grest American Music Hall in San Francisco dedicated to the memory of Jerry Garcia, who would have turned 80 on August 1 of that year.  The next night at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival on October 1, 2002, 2 years ago today, Costello continued his tribute to the late Grateful Dead guitarist, as captured in thsi webcast recording. Costello's set included 4 Garcia-Hunter tunes - Brown Eyed Women, Loser, Ramble On Rose, and Sugaree.

2020s - #1: Back in August, we brought you a show by Jorma Kaukonen which demonstrated one way artists played concerts during the pandemic, namely doing webcast broadcasts from their home based studios. This webcast from October 1, 2020, 4 years ago today, show cases another form of pandemic era concert. Warren Haynes played a series of outdoor shows at South Farms in Morris, CT, where folks purchased spaces that were socially distanced.  The shows were also streamed on the web.  Warren's set list at this show included some great cover tunes, including finishing up the second set with a version of Paul McCartney's Maybe I'm Amazed.
