As promised yesterday, here is part 2 of our 1987 “Same Tour, Different Show” entry from John Hiatt. This one’s an FM broadcast from San Francisco on September 18, 1987, 27 years ago this very day. The set list is a bit shorter as Hiatt was serving as the lead-in for another “overnight sensation”, bluesman Robert Cray, who after 10 years of touring and recording, had struck it big in late 1986 with the album Strong Persuader, featuring the single, Smoking Gun.

John Hiatt - 1987-09-17 - Santa FE, NM (SBD)

On May 29, 1987, John Hiatt released the album Bring The Family, and quickly became an “overnight sensation”. Of course, earning that label was 13 years and 7 prior albums in the making. In fact, when Hiatt recorded Bring The Family, he was actually on the verge of quitting the business, having recently been dropped by his record label. Hiatt, with encouragement from John Chelew of McCabe's Guitar Shop who had heard some of the early versions of tunes that wound up on the album, decided to take one more crack at recording. Demon Records in the UK put up about $30,000 to help Hiatt record an album. Then old friends, Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner joined Hiatt in the studio. Due to budget constraints, the entire record had to be recorded in just 4 days. Hiatt and Lowe actually shared a hotel room at a local Holiday Inn to save money. (Lowe, by the way, took no payment for his contribution). The result - bring The Family became one of the cornerstones of Hiatt’s career, featuring songs such as Memphis in the Meantime, Thing Called Love, Lipstick Sunset Have a Little Faith in Me, Thank You Girl and Learning How to Love You. This Soundboard recording captures Hiatt on September 17, 1987, 27 years ago today, in Santa Fe, on tour in support of Bring The Family. Here’s the 3rd and final part of our Jerry Garcia “Same Tour, Different Show” entry from 1989. This soundboard captures Jerry, with Clarence Clemons once again sitting in, on September 16, 1989, 25 years ago today. By the way, at one point, Garcia and Weir actually considered inviting Clarence to join the Grateful Dead as a full time member. According to Weir, it was in the early 1990s, right after Springsteen broke up the E-Street band (temporarily, it turned out). It might have worked, except that a couple members of the Dead “hated saxophones”. Go here to read more about how close Clarence came to being a Dead Head!

Rolling Stones - 1997-09-15 - Toronto, Canada (SBD)

On September 29, 1997, the Rolling Stones released Bridges to Babylon, their last studio album of the 20th century. While the album met with mixed reviews, it still climbed to #3 of the Billboard charts in the US and certified platinum by November. The Stones launched a yea-long worldwide tour in support of the album, announcing their plans at a press conference underneath the Brooklyn Bridge! The Bridges to Babylon Tour would become the largest Rolling Stones tour to date, exceeding the sales of their record-breaking 1994-1995 Voodoo Lounge Tour. Estimates are that over 4.5 million people attended the 108 shows played during the tour. As had become a habit for the Stones since their 1989 Steel Wheels tour, the band visited Toronto to play a warm up show at a small club. This soundboard captures the Stones on September 15, 1997, 17 years ago today, at the Masonic Temple in their favorite Canadian city. Grateful Dead - 1974-09-14 - Munich, Germany (SBD)

While I’m partial to 1977 as the Grateful Dead’s finest year, with 1973 as a close second, many will argue that 1974 was the band’s high point. That year, the Dead rolled out the Wall of Sound, an enormous concert speaker system designed to be distortion-free while serving as its own monitoring system. The Wall of Sound was the largest sound system developed up to that point with over 600 speakers that could unleash a total of 26,400 watts of audio power. Four tractor trailers and 21 crew members were required to haul and set up the 75-ton Wall. With the Wall Of Sound at their back, the Dead played several shows in 1974 that rank among their best ever, including July 31 at Dillon Stadium and August 6 at Roosevelt Stadium (both officially released), as well as June 23 in Miami. In addition, the Grateful Dead played their 5 “retirement” shows at Winterland in October 1974, immortalized in the Grateful Dead movie, though the band eventually would return to touring after 18 months away. The Dead also returned to Europe in 1974, playing 7 shows on that continent in September. Bruce Springsteen - 1975-09-12 - Austin, TX (SBD)

On August 13, 1975, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band began a five-night, 10-show stand at New York's Bottom Line. The engagement, broadcast live on WNEW-FM, attracted major media attention and convinced many skeptics that Springsteen was for real. Decades later, Rolling Stone magazine would name the stand as one of the 50 Moments That Changed Rock and Roll. As the Bottom Line run ended, the album Born To Run was released. The album reached number 3 on the Billboard charts, and while there were no hit singles, the title track, Thunder Road, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out and Jungleland became staples of album oriented rock radio stations. Born to Run is now considered by many critics and fans to be among the best rock and roll albums of all time and Springsteen's finest work. Amidst all that publicity and attention, Bruce continued his small club tour, traveling to Texas in mid September for a series of 5 shows.
