In thinking about solo shows from Grateful Dead members, I had to include one from lyricist Robert Hunter, who was officially inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the band. Hunter also sat in with Jerry Garcia Band on a few occasions in the winter of 1980. This soundboard recording captures Hunter on July 15, 1978, 37 years ago today, at TG's in Greenwood Lake.

Edie Brickell - 1990-07-14 - Foxboro, MA (SBD)

In 1985, Edie Brickell was invited to sing with friends from her old high school in a local folk rock group, New Bohemians. Soon after, she would join the band as lead singer. Three years later, their 1988 debut album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, became surprise critical and commercial success. The album sold over 3 million copies and climbed to #4 on the Billboard charts. The single, What I Am, went to # 7 on the Billboard charts and received extensive airplay on MTV. Edie and the new Bohiemans led in twice for the Grateful Dead on July 12, 1990 and this show, a soundboard recording, from July 14, 1990, a quarter century ago today, but didn’t get on stage with the band either of those nights. She did, however sit in with them at Madison Square Garden on September 20, 1993 for 2 tunes, The Other One and Going Down The Road Feeling Bad.

The Bangles - 2011-07-14 - Santa Monica CA (HQ Aud)

Another unlikely pairing that truly did happen. On October 18, 1988, The Bangles, after opening for George Michael at the Superdome, headed over to Kiefer Lakefront Arena, where they joined the Dead for an encore of Iko Iko and Knockin on Heaven’s Door. You can catch a video of that performance here. So, to commemorate one of the most unusual Grateful Dead collaborations, we bring you this HQ audience recording of the Bangles live on July 14, 2011, 4 years ago today.

Grateful Dead - 1970-07-14 - San Rafael, CA (SBD)

After the psychedelic live trip that was the year 1969, the Grateful Dead used 1970 to hone their song writing, vocal harmonies, and studio recordings. Two of the band’s finest albums, Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, were released in 1970. In fact, legend has it that Jerry Garcia had made an arrangement that in return for his playing pedal steel guitar on Teach Your Children, CSNY would teach the members of the Grateful Dead how to sing harmony for those albums. In any event, just because the Dead spent significant time in the studio in 1970 doesn't mean they didn’t go out on the road. In fact, the band played 142 live shows in 1970! This soundboard captures the Dead on July 14, 1970, 45 years ago today, with a set list filled with tunes from both Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty.

• On January 31, the Dead, along with their sound man, Owsley "The Bear" Stanley, are busted in New Orleans for drugs. The band would immortalize the event in the lyrics to Truckin, the closing song on American Beauty, where they sing of being busted, down on Bourbon Street”.
• The Dead release Workingman’s Dead on June 14. The album was ranked #262 on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 500 albums of all time and includes classic tracks such as Casey Jones and Uncle John's Band. 
• From June 24 to July 5, The Dead participated in the Festival Express, along with Janis Joplin and The Band, a concert tour featuring shows in 3 Canadian cities during which the artists traveled by train to each gig. The tour was documented in a 2003 film that includes footage of the band members jamming together during the train rides. 
• The Dead play their first gig in Europe on May 24 in Newcastle. The next time they cross the pond it will be for the legendary Europe 72 tour. 
• The Dead release American Beauty on November 1. The album was ranked #258 on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 500 albums of all time and includes classic tracks such as Sugar Magnolia, Friend Of The Devil, Ripple, Box Of Rain and Truckin'. 
• Live concerts from 1970 that have been officially released include: January 18, February 2, February 4, April 18, May 2 and May 15.
