John Fogerty - 1986-09-14 - Mansfield, MA (SBD)

John Fogerty was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993 as part of Creedence Clearwater Revival. That class also included The Doors, Etta James, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Ruth Brown, Van Morrison and Sly & the Family Stone. Bruce Springsteen made the induction speech for CCR. As mentioned in an earlier post, the 1993 ceremony was filled with memorable moments, both good and bad. One of the unfortunate moments came when John Fogerty refused to play with the other members of CCR. Instead he played a set of the group’s classics backed by Bruce Springsteen & Robbie Robertson.

Of course, Fogerty was no stranger to conflict and controversy. Fogerty may have been the leader of Creedence Clearwater Revival, but from 1973 to 1986 , his live performances would have given you no clue to his past. During that time, due to a host of legal disputes with Fantasy Records, his former record company, Fogerty refused to play any Creedence material in concert. While it was disappointing for his fans, you could understand Fogerty’s frustration since one lawsuit accused him of plagiarizing his own music! That case claimed that his solo tune Old Man Down The Road, published by Warner Brothers, stole the chorus from the Creedence song, Run Through The Jungle, published by Fantasy. Fogerty eventually won the case by demonstrating in the court room how he composed songs. In any event, when he went on tour in 1986 in support of his solo discs, Centerfield and Eye of The Zombie, no CCR tunes were in the set list. This soundboard recording from September 14, 1986, 29 years ago today, while not a complete show, provides some insight into Fogerty’s music and mood at the time The first 2 songs are direct attacks on the Chairman of Fantasy, Saul Zaentz, who had brought the lawsuits against Fogerty. In addition, the set list includes material from The Eye of The Zombie album, the tone of which was so dark that after this tour, Fogerty stopped playing any songs from that disc for over 20 years. Finally, the show includes 3 of his best known solo tunes, Centerfield, Rock and Roll Girls, and the aforementioned Old Man Down The Road.

Jefferson Airplane was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, the same year as David Bowie, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Doors, Little Willie John, The Shirelles and The Velvet Underground. Fittingly, Phil Lesh & Mickey Heart of The Grateful Dead, who pioneered the San Francisco sound with The Airplane, made the induction speech. Unfortunately, Grace Slick did not attend the ceremony, preventing a full band reunion. Grace stuck to her beliefs "all rock-and-rollers over the age of 50 look stupid and should retire."

This soundboard recording, from September 14 1970, 45 years ago today, captures the Airplane on their home turf in San Francisco, at the legendary Fillmore West. It also catches the band right before some dramatic changes. Just a few weeks later, Papa John Creach would join the band, and would contribute his jazz/blues flavored violin work to Tuna, as well. Also in October, Paul Kantner would release his first solo album, the science fiction-themed Blows Against The Empire. The album was credited to Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship, a harbinger of things to come. As mentioned in an earlier post, by March 1971, Marty Balin would leave the band and the end of the Airplane was drawing near (though the Starship would emerge from those ashes). This show, therefore, is one of the last where Balin, Slick, Kanter, Kaukonen, and Cassidy are together on stage, belting out the songs that made the Airplane one of the leading lights of the Summer of Love generation. The class, like the prior year’s, once again reflected a heavy punk and new wave influence. The Edge of U2 handled the induction speech for The Clash. This FM broadcast captures The Clash in their early days, on September 14, 1979, 3 dozen years ago today.

The Doors were inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 1993, along with Cream, Etta James, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Ruth Brown, Van Morrison and Sly & the Family Stone. Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam not only made the induction speech, but also joined the surviving members of the band to handle lead vocals on a raucous version of Roadhouse Blues.

Now, sometimes in writing these posts, it takes me a while to come up with an interesting story line related to the concert or the band in question. Other times, however, I get really lucky and the post almost writes itself. This is one of those lucky times! The Doors performance at the Toronto Rock & Roll Festival on September 13, 1969, 46 years ago today, has so many story lines associated with it that I may not have enough room or time to write about them all. First off, The Doors, who closed the festival, went on stage at about 2 am, and were the only band that refused to be filmed for a documentary called Sweet Toronto. Second, this was the same festival where John Lennon and The Plastic One Band played a set, with Eric Clapton on guitar. Yoko was so unpopular at the time that her performance was met with a hail of boo's! The subsequent album that Lennon released, called Live Peace in Toronto 1969, was the first live album released by any Beatle, either as a group or separately. Finally, this performance by The Doors was for years incorrectly listed as being from Mexico. In fact, if you look below, you'll not only find the correct artwork showing this concert taking place in Toronto, but also artwork billing this performance as Mexican Caravan. This HQ Audience recording sounds great and is definitely worth having in your collection, regardless of whether it took place north or south of the US border!

Pink Floyd – 1994-09-13 – Torino, Italy (SBD)

Pink Floyd joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, the same year as David Bowie, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jefferson Airplane, Little Willie John, The Shirelles and The Velvet Underground. Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins inducted the band. Roger Waters did not attend, as he was still feuding with David Gilmour and the rest of Pink Floyd, though they would eventually patch things up and play together at Live 8. This recording, however, predates their reconciliation and comes from the same year they were inducted. In March 1994, Pink Floyd launched their Division Bell tour in support of their recently released album of the same name. By the time the tour concluded on October 29 of that year, the band had played in front of 5.5 million fans in 68 cities. The concerts featured even more impressive special effects than the previous tour, including two custom designed airships. The tour grossed over $250 million, setting a record at the time. At some shows, the band played Dark Side of The Moon in its entirety for the first time since 1975! This soundboard, from September 13, 1994 from Torino Italy, 21 years ago today, captures Pink Floyd near the end of the tour. Who knew at the time that their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame would coincide with what would be the last Pink Floyd tour ever!

Rolling Stones - 1965-09-13 - Hamburg, Germany (SBD)

A year after the Beatles entered the Rock Hall, the band often thought of as the 2nd greatest of all time, The Rolling Stones were inducted. The 1989 class also included The Temptations, Dion, Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder. An interesting note - when The Beatles were elected, Mick Jagger made the induction speech. Then when the Stones were inducted, Pete Townshend of The Who made the induction speech. The next year, 1990, The Who would be inducted. So, it almost seems as if the torch passed from the first to the 2nd to arguable the 3rd greatest rock band in history. I know fans of Led Zep or Pink Floyd may argue those rankings but it does make a nice story with a neat bit of symmetry. In any event, this soundboard eroding captures the Stones in their early days, in Hamburg on September 13, 1965, a half century ago this very day.

Eric Clapton - 1996-09-12 - New York, NY (SBD)

Eric Clapton is the only man inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame on 3 different occasions - as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992, then with Cream in 1993 and finally as a solo artist in 2000. By the way, he was also a member of Derek & the Dominoes, Blind Faith and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, three other bands that deserve Rock Hall consideration! The 2000 class also included Bonnie Raitt, Earth, Wind & Fire, James Taylor, The Moonglows and the Lovin' Spoonful. The 2000 class was the first time sidemen were recognized, with artists such as Scotty Moore and King Curtis gaining election. Robbie Robertson inducted EC, 6 years after Slowhand had done the same for The Band. This soundboard captures Eric 4 years before his induction as a solo artist, On September 12, 1996, 19 years ago today.By the way, EC gets some help at this show from Sheryl Crow, who one day may also find herself in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
