Jerry Garcia with Merl Saunders - 1973-07-08 - Sausalito CA (FM)

Besides the countless times I saw the Dead live, I attended 4 Jerry Garcia Band concerts - in March 1978 at the Capitol Theater, in March 1980, also at the Capitol (a show that has been officially released), in August 1984 at Caldwell College and finally in November 1991 at Madison Square Garden. Garcia solo shows were like Dead concerts in some ways as some songs overlapped, the set lists were unpredictable and the jamming intense, but unlike them in others.  Garcia on his own played an amazing variety of covers not found in the Dead's set lists, broke out some of his rarer solo tunes, and took far more solos than he would when jamming with the Dead. To  sum it up, seeing Garcia solo was not seeing the Dead, and vice versa.

This soundboard recording goes back before any Garica or Dead show I attended, to July 5, 1973, 43 years ago today.  By the way, this show, which features Merle Saunders, takes place just 3 days after the latest official release in the GarciaLive series, the July 5, 1973 show concert with Merle at the Lion's Share in San Anselmo.

The Pretenders - 1987-07-07 - Montreux, Switzerland (FM)

I've seen the Pretenders twice, once early on in their career in October 1981 at the Palladium, and then again, in April 1987 at Radio City Music Hall, after the commercial success of the albums Learning To Crawl & Get Close.

This FM broadcast captures The Pretenders just a few months after the 2nd show I attended, on July 7, 1987, 29 years ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 2012-07-07 - Roskilde, Denmark (IEM)

Didn't realize it until I went to write this post, but I've seen Mr. Springsteen 9 times, in 4 different decades (70s, 80s, 90s, & 2000's) with 2 different backing bands (the E-Streeters and those other guys he played with in the 1990s, whoever they were!).  

This IEM recording captures Bruce on a tour when I didn't see him. promoting the Wrecking Ball album while headlining the Roskilde Festival on July 7, 2012, just 4 years ago today.

Rockpile - 1979-07-06 - Boston, MA (FM)

I saw Rockpile just once, on July 8, 1979 at Belmont Race Track. The were leading in for Blondie, and it was the night after I saw Stephen Stills at the Garden State Arts Center. part of that run of 4 concerts in 3 weekends in July 1979.  They opened with the highly appropriate The Race Is On!  By the way, the contrast between the new wavers attending the show and the Belmont track regulars - think Oscar Madison from the Odd Couple TV series - was priceless.

This FM broadcast captures Rockpile just 2 days before I saw them, in Boston on July 6, 1979, 37 years ago today.

The Police - 2008-07-05 - Madrid, Spain (SBD)

I saw The Police just once, in January 1982, at Madison Square Garden, but what a historic show it was. The Go Gos, who opened, had the number 1 album on the Billboard charts at the time.  The Police, who headlined, had the #2 album on those charts!  New Wave had arrived, commanding the charts and selling out "The World's Most Famous Arena."

Today's post is from a bit later in the band's often turbulent career.  On February 11, 2007, The Police reunited after being apart for almost 20 years for a performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. As they took the stage for the Grammy’s, the trio proclaimed "Ladies and gentlemen, we are The Police, and we're back!” The next day, at a press conference at the Whisky a Go Go, they announced they would launch a world tour starting in Vancouver ion May 28. The tour would last well over a year, with the final show played held on August 7, 2008 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Police sold 3.7 million tickets and grossed $358 million during their reunion sojourn, making it the third-highest-grossing tour of all-time at its conclusion. This soundboard recording captures The Police on July 5, 2008, 8 years ago today, in Madrid at the Rock in Rio festival, the last night of the 2nd European leg of the tour.

Santana – 1981-07-04 – Cape Cod, MA (FM)

As mentioned in my Allman Brothers post, I saw Carlos Sanatan live at the Crackdown on Crack Concert on October 31, 1986.  The first time I saw Carlos, however, was on July 7, 1981, I saw Carlos Santana in concert for the first time. I was about a month removed from college graduation, and enjoying a summer off before starting business school in the fall. My buddies and I were going to see Carlos at a new outdoor concert venue that John Scher had opened, the South Mountain Arena in West Orange NJ. When we arrived, we found out that it wasn’t quite an Arena. In fact, it wasn’t quite an Amphitheater or Hall or an Arts Center or anything quite so fancy. It was…. THE SIDE OF A HILL. Yep, Mr. Scher, who above all knew how to make a buck, rented space in a large park, put a stage at the bottom of a hill, put up fences to keep out anyone without a ticket, and created a concert venue. I guess it’s a little late for me to complain, especially since I bought to tickets to several other shows at South Mountain that summer. All issues with the venue were forgotten once Carlos hit the stage. He played a blistering set, featuring songs from his latest album Zebop, as well as a host of classics. We had gone hoping that Carlos would play Open Invitation, and he delivered. You, see, when I was in college, a cover band called Yasgur’s Farm usually played Open Invitation to close their shows, which in a beer induced haze, probably sounded way better than it really was. In any event, that sort of became a theme song for my group of friends. Finally hearing Carlos play it was one of the highlights of my concert “career”.

While I couldn’t find a bootleg of the South Mountain show, I did find this FM Broadcast from a few days earlier, July 4, 1981, 35 years ago this very day. from Cape Cod. The set list is about the same as the show I attended.

I saw Joe Jackson 3 times in the early 1980s - February 1980, August 1980 and October 1982 - and watched the transition from Angry Joe to Sentimental Joe happen right before my very eyes!
