Dire Straits - 1979-03-06 - Upper Darby, PA (SBD)

1979: When Dire Straits released their self titled debut album in February 1978, the music industry barely paid attention. Fortunately for the band, Karin Berg, working at Warner Brothers in New York did. With her backing, the band was booked to tour as the opening act for the Talking Heads. The success of that tour led to a US recording contract with Warner, followed by the release of their debut album worldwide. The disc would reach the top 10 in every country in Europe, while climbing to number 2 on the US charts. In early 1979, they launched their first headlining tour, playing 51 sold-out concerts over a 38-day period. Sultans of Swing, the single from their album which was released during that tour, scaled the charts to reach number four in the United States and number eight in the United Kingdom. This soundboard recording captures Dire Straits during their break though in early 1979, at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia on March 6, 38 years ago today. 1979: As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, a host of punk and new wave bands rose to prominence. While many would reach the peak of their fame in the 1980s, they paid their dues in the 1970s. For example, in early 1979, The Police went on tour in North America in support of their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour. The tour kicked off on March 1 at the legendary Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles and ran until May 25, with the band criss-crossing the US and Canada. They often played 2 shows a night, and rarely took a day off. Given that the album had flopped when initially released, the band felt compelled to tour relentlessly in hopes of gaining exposure for themselves and airplay for their songs. The strategy seemed to work, as the album eventually climbed to the #23 position on the Billboard charts in the US, and rose all the way to the #2 position in the UK. In addition, 3 singles from the disc – Roxanne, Can’t Stand Losing You and So Lonely - charted in the top 20 in the UK in 1979. Roxanne also climbed to the #32 spot on the US Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the band just 4 days after the start of the tour, on March 5, 1979, 38 years ago today.

McGuinn & Clark - 1978-03-04 - Capitol Theatre, NJ (FM)

1978: The 1970s was a time of transformation in rock music. Not only did new genres of music emerge and flourish, but also long time bands reinvented themselves. The Jefferson Airplane became The Jefferson Starship. Fleetwood Mac transformed from a blues band to one of the founders of the album oriented rock sound. The Bee Gees abandoned pop music to become the leaders of disco nation. While their change may not have been as dramatic as the 3 just mentioned, the Byrds also evolved during the late 1970s. After the band broke up in 1973, former members worked on and off with each other throughout the rest of the decade. In 1979, 3 of them, McGuinn, Clark and Hillman formally reunited to record an album and tour. The seeds of that partnership were sown in early 1978, when McGuinn and Clark played a series of acoustic shows together at small venues such as this concert at The Capitol Theater in Passaic  on March 14, 1978, 39 years ago today.

Dave Mason - 1974-03-02 - Boston MA (HQ Aud)

1974: After leaving Traffic in 1969, Mason released a solo album every year from 1970 through 1975. His best charting single during that period was Only You Know and I Know, which hit Number 42 on the Billboard charts in 1970. His biggest success, however, would come in 1977, with the release of the album Let It Flow. That disc would produce 3 top 100 tunes - So High at #89, Let It Go Let It Flow at #45 and We Just Disagree at #12. This high quality recording, however, is from before that run of hits, as it features Mason on March 2, 1974, 43 years years ago today, from the Orpeheum Theater Concert Hall in Boston. By the way, while many shows in the Northeast during this time were taped by Dan Lampanski, this one was recorded by Steve Hopkins. One other note - Mason plays a cover of All Along The Watchtower., a highly appropriate choice since he played acoustic guitar on Jimi Hendrix's legendary version of that tune!

1978:  Most rock fans know that The Band disbanded in 1976, playing their last show at Winterland on Thanksgiving, a concert filled with special guests that was immortalized on the film, The Last Waltz.  And, its common knowledge that the group reformed in 1983, san Robbie Robertson and resumed recording and touring.  WHat's far less well known, however, is that for one brief moemnet in 1978, the original b=band reunited for just a few brief moments.  At a Rick Danko concert in Los Los Angeles on March 1, 1978, 39 years ago today,  Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm and even Robbie Robertson joined Danko on stage to reprise some classic Band tunes. This soundboard recording captures that historic moment in rock history, and you can find pictures of  that show here.

Dave Edmunds - 1985-02-28 - Capitol, Passaic, NJ (SBD)

1985 - Yesterday we brought you Nick Lowe of Rockpile flying solo in 1985, so today its only fitting that we bring your Dave Edmunds doing like wise in the same year.  In late 1984, Edmunds released the album Riff Raff, once again collaborating with Jeff Lynne, formerly of ELO, as he had done on his 1983 album, Information. Unfortunately, the 2nd time around for Edmunds and Lynne was not quite as successful. Whereas Information had climbed to  #51 on the Billboard 200 album chart and spawned a top-40 single in "Slipping Away,  Riff Raff  made it to only #140, and the single Something About You failed to crack the Billboard Hot 100.  Nonetheless, Edmunds toured in support of the album, as captured in this soundboard recording from the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ on February 28, 1985, 32 years ago today.
