As long time followers of So Many Roads know, our blog takes a "this day in history" approach to selecting shows. In other words, if it's Aoril 11,  than the show we post took place on April 11 sometime between 1950 and the present day.

Every now and then, a day rolls by and we don't have a new show associated with that date.  Some times we've gotten around that by posting my monthly column on that day.  Other times, we've used some other type of informational post.

Well, in the spirit of trying something new, this time around, since I don't have a new show to post on April 11, I've re-posted download links for many of the prior shows we posted on that date.  Those shows are listed below. Eddie Money - 1979-04-10 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

In December 1977, the late Eddie Money released his self-titled debut album, which went to #37 on the Billboard charts. The album contained what would become 2 of Eddie’s best known songs, Baby Hold On and Two Tickets To Paradise, which reached #11 and #22 respectively on the charts. (A side note - props to Eddie for his willingness to poke fun at himself in the Geico commercial where he owns a travel agency and makes travel arrangements by singing Two Tickets To Paradise - you can see it here.) He released his follow up disc, Life For The Taking, in January 1979, an album most written in hotel rooms and recorded during concert sound checks as Eddie was constantly on the roads promoting his debut disc. Life for The taking climbed all the way to #17 on the Billboard charts. This FM broadcast captures Eddie in San Francisco on tour in support of his 2nd disc, on April 10, 1979. 41 years ago today.

Jerry Garcia (Legion Of  Mary) - 1975-04-09 - Bottom Line, NY NY (SBD) 

In the early 1970s. Jerry Garcia played countless shows with keyboardist Merle Saunders, even releasing a live album in 1973 entitled Live At The Keystone.  In 1974, that partnership grew into Legion Of Mary, also including John Kahn on base. and John Kahn, Martin Fierro on saxophone and flute, Ron Tutt, who also worked with Elvis Presley, on drums. According the the Jerry Garcia web site "the presence of Tutt was what determined the band’s billing for each show—with him they were Legion of Mary, and without him they played as Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders." The group played together until the summer of 1975, after which the Jerry Garcia Band became Garcia’s main performing group when the Grateful Dead were off the road.  All in all, Legion of Mary performed 52 live shows as a group.  This soundboard recording captures them at the Bottom Line in New York on April 9, 1975, 45 years ago today.

Gregg Allman - 1974-04-08 - Boston MA (SBD)

In 1973 as the Allman Brothers Band was beginning on a 3 year road toward their first break up, Gregg Allman released his first sol album, entitled look back,  In 1974 he went of the road in support of the disc, symbolically backed by band Cowboy, who had been one of his late brother Duane's favorite bands. Cowboy,also played a short set during the intermission at each show.. The tour spawned a live album, recorded at the Caopirol Theater in Passaic and Carnegie Hall in New York (Could two venue have been more different - the former an X-rated movie theater by day in a tun down NJ neighborhood, the latter a majestic palace in the heart of New York's midtown district.)  This soundboard recording captures Gregg & Cowboy during that tour, on April 8, 1974, 46 years ago today, in Boston.

Jerry Garcia (Reconstruction)  - 1979-04-08 - Cotati, CA (SBD)

Reconstruction was another side project Jerry Garcia was involved in during the decade of the 1970s. Founded by Garcia's long time bassist, John Kahn, in early 1979, Reconstruction was built around Jerry and a quartet of jazz players. According to the Jerry Garcia website, it's unclear if Garcia was supposed to be permanent member of the band.  By the time they started to perform in January 1979, however, Jerry was officially in. That limited performances to when the Grateful Dead were off the road. On a couple of occasions, they attempted to sub Jerry Miller on guitar, but the crowds expected to see the "real" Jerry" each time. Reconstruction played just over fifty shows during 1979, all on the west coast.  This soundboard captures one of those shows, on April 8, 1979, 41 years ago today!

Badfinger - 1972-04-07 - Kansas City, MO (SBD) 

Few bands in rock history have been as star crossed as Badfinger. The band was signed by Apple Records in 1969, and scored a top 10 hit in the US with the tune Come & Get It, written by Paul McCartney. Two more top 10 songs, and a top 15 single would follow in the net 3 years, with No Matter What, Day After Day and Baby Blue. Badfinger would get caught, unfortunately, in the chaotic unravelling of Apple, which made it difficult for the band to get paid. Moreover, their manager, Stan Polley, was embezzling what funds the bad did have. The financial crisis coupled with legal entanglements brought on by the demise of Apple proved too much for Peter Ham,.one of the founders of the band, to endure. He committed suicide at the age of 27 in 1975. Eight years later, Tom Evans of the band would do likewise. Two tragic ends to what was once a promising musical career. This soundboard recording captured Badfinger, before the dark times, during their triumphant 1972 tour promoting the album Straight Up and the single Day After Day, on April 7, 1972, 4 dozen years ago today. The Eagles - 1974-04-06 - California Jam, Ontario, CA (FM)

On March 22, 1974, The Eagles released their 3rd studio album, entitled On The Border.  During the recording of the disc, In January 1974,  Glenn Frey called Don Felder to add slide guitar to the song Good Day in Hell.  The band was so impressed with Felder's work that they invited him to join the group as the fifth Eagle the next day. The album would go to #17 on the Billboard charts, and spawn the first of the band's number 1 singles, the tune Best of My Love.  Two other singles, Already Gone, and James Dean, would reach #32 and #77, respectively on the charts.  A few weeks after the album's release, Th Eagles played at California Jam in Ontario, a festival billed as The Woodstock of The West that was headlined by Deep Purple and ELP and drew a crowd over 300,000 fans  This FM Broadcast captures the Eagles at that festival on April 6, 1974, 46 years ago today.  Felder wasn't able to join the band due to the birth of his son, so Jackson Browne filled in or him!
