Bruce Cockburn - 1990-05-09 - Koln Germany (FM) 

In 1984, I bought Bruce Cockburn’s album Stealing Fire, which yielded the well-known singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I Had A Rocket Launcher. I soon lost touch with Cockburn’s music, however, moving on to other bands. I reconnected with his material, however, in the early 1990s, thanks to Jerry Garcia. At a concert at Madison Square Garden in November 1991, I heard Garcia play a wonderful tune called Waiting On A Miracle. Knowing it wasn’t a Jerry original, I did some research, and lo and behold, learned it was written by Cockburn about the revolution in Nicaragua. As long time readers of this blog know, I have always credited the Dead for introducing me to a host of music and styles that I might never otherwise learned about. This FM broadcast captures Cockburn in Germany on May 9, 1990, 31 years ago today. If you’re not familiar with his work, download this give it a listen - I think you’ll be very surprised and pleased. Rachel Sweet - 1980-05-08 - Bottom Line, NY (FM) 

As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, punk and new wave music, which had been the province of underground and college radio stations, began to make its way onto more mainstream stations such as WNEW-FM in New York. The first time I heard the then 18 year old Rachel Sweet on WNEW, I had to run out and buy her debut album, Fool Around. The disc became a staple on the turntable (yes - it's that old!) in my college dorm room. Part new wave, part early 60's girl group in sound, the album featured songs such a B-A-B-Y, Wildwood Saloon, I Go to Pieces and Sad Song. In the summer of 1979, I got to see Rachel in Central Park as the lead in for Eddie Money. Then, in early 1980, tickets went on sale for Jerry Garcia at the Capitol Theatre, with Rachel Sweet as his lead-in. While my roomies weren't huge Garcia fans, they all agreed we should get tickets so we could see Rachel. And, so I did! The show was scheduled for March 1, 1980. A week before the concert, however, came the announcement that Robert Hunter had replaced Rachel Sweet as the lead-in. No explanation was provided, but I'm guessing there was concern that the Dead Head audience may not have appreciated Ms. Sweet. In any event, while I didn’t get to see Rachel that spring, plenty of other folks did. This FM broadcast features Rachel Sweet on May 8, 1980. 41 years ago today.

Grateful Dead - 1981-05-07 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

From 1973 to 1982, Tom Synder hosted The Tomorrow Show, a talk show unlike the usual late-night fare, with Snyder, cigarette in hand, alternating between asking hard-hitting questions and offering personal observations that made the interview closer to a conversation. Snyder's style and delivery was easily lampooned, with Dan Akryod of Saturday Night Live frequently doing impersonations of the last night host. Snyder's show often featured musicians as guests, with the likes of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Public Image Ltd, The Clash, KISS, The Ramones, and U2 all appearing on the show.  The Grateful Dead were Synder's guests on May 7, 1981, 4 decades ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording. The band used their appearance to promote the newly released live double album Reckoning, which featured tunes recorded during the acoustic sets they played at the Warfield Theater and Radio City Music Hall in the fall of 1980.

Bruce Hornsby - 1996-05-06 - Atlanta, GA (SBD)

For Bruce Hornsby, the year 1996 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of his Grammy Award winning debut album, The Way It Is. Rather than look backward, however, Hornsby continued to find ways to push his musical style forward. The cover of his recently released album, Hot House, featured an imagined jam session between bluegrass legend Bill Monroe and jazz legend Charlie Parker, two genres of music that Hornsby incorporated into the songs on that disc. The album also featured guest appearances by such diverse artists as Bela Fleck, Pat Metheney and the late Jerry Garcia. During this period, Hornsby's concerts took on a more improvisational tone, as he often took requests from the audience, rather than work from a set list. He would challenge himself to find ways to seamlessly string together diverse requests, turning the album versions of songs into more complex arrangements. As he says on his website, "I think of my songs as living beings that evolve and change and grow through the years." In his continuing quest to grow and evolve his music, Hornsby also participated in the Further Festival in the summer of  1996, one of the many Grateful Dead family endeavors launched in the wake of the death of Jerry Garcia. His band played along with Bob Weir & Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and others. Given all that, we figured it would be great to bring you  a host of shows from Hornsby's 1996 spring tour so you could see for yourself the evolution of his musical style. We;ll start with this soundboard recording from May 6, 1996,  a quarter century ago this very day, from Atlanta.

Elvis Costello - 1978-05-05 - Capitol, NJ (SBD) 

The Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ, owned and operated by John Scher, followed in the tradition of the Fillmore East, which had been Bill Graham's concert venue in NYC. It was was gritty and grimy, located in a tough neighborhood. During the day, the theater showed X-rated movies! But Scher knew how to draw rock’s biggest and best to his 3000 seat venue in the center of Passaic. He was able get acts like The Rolling Stones, The Who, Bruce Springsteen and The Grateful Dead to play the Capitol, even after they were routinely selling out 50,000 seat arenas! WNEW-FM was great partners with the Capitol and countless shows from Passaic were broadcast live on the station. Here's one of those broadcasts, featuring Elvis Costello on May 5, 1978, 43 years ago today.

The Wallflowers - 2005-05-03 - Chicago, IL (FM)

One of the most difficult things in rock is for a son to follow in his father’s footsteps, especially if dad just happens to be one the Mount Rushmore of rock legends. Despite that formidable challenge, Jakob Dylan managed to have himself quite a nice rock and roll career, both with the Wallflowers and on his own. The Wallflower’s 2nd album, Bringing Down The Horse, went to #4 on the Billboard charts and certified 4 times platinum. The disc yielded 4 singles which received substantial airplay, One Headlight, 6th Avenue Heartache, Three Marlenas and The Difference. While subsequent Wallflower discs weren’t quite as successful, all 4 managed to crack the top 50 on the billboard charts. Jakob’s 2 solo albums, released in 2008 and 2010, both cracked the to 25 on the Billboard charts. This FM broadcast captures Jakob with the Wallflowers on May 3, 2005, 16 years ago today, in Chicago.
