From October 1974 to June 1976, The Grateful Dead took an extended break from touring from October 1974 to Spring 1976. During the Dead's hiatus, Bob Weir joined his long time pal, Matthew Kelly in the band Kingfish. Weir's arrival had two major impacts on the band, which were both a blessing and a curse. First, Kingfish finally got a recording contract, thanks to the Grateful Dead's new label, Round Records. Second, from that point in they were often identified as Bob Weir's backing band.  This soundboard recording captures Kingfish with Weir on their home turf in San Francisco on February 7, 1976, 4 dozen years ago this very day!

U2 - 1998-02-06 - Buenos Aires, Argentina (FM) 

In March 1997, U2 released the album Pop, which continued the band’s experimentation with a variety of musical styles, including alternative rock, techno, dance and electronica. The album employed a variety of production techniques relatively new to U2, including sampling, loops, programmed drum machines and sequencing. The band experienced numerous difficulties in completing the album, missing the original November 1996 release date and barely finishing production before the start of their Pop Mart tour in April 1997. In the end, both the album and the subsequent tour met with mixed reviews from critics and fans. Long time U2 fans did not know what to make of the songs from the new album. While many of the special effects and elaborate staging at the concerts were designed to poke fun at popular culture, the jokes often missed their mark, and simply confused those in attendance. In fact, after the tour ended, U2 announced it would begin “reapplying for the job of best band in the world.” This FM broadcast captures U2 in Argentia on February 6, 1998, 26 years ago today, near the end of the Pop Mart tour. Leon Russell - 1971-02-05 - Baarn, Netherlands (FM)

The first 2 years of the decade of the 1970s produced one success after another for Leon Russell. In early 1970, he organized the backing band for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour, which included himself as well as host of musicians who had supported Delaney and Bonnie during their 1969/1970 tour. He also released his self titled solo album which included the the first recording of what would become his signature tune, A Song for You, That song has since been covered by more than 40 different artists including the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Donny Hathaway, and Christina Aguilera. Also in 1970, Russell played piano on Dave Mason's album, Alone Together, most notably on the song Sad and Deep as You. In March 1971, he produced some tracks for Bob Dylan, including Watching the River Flow and When I Paint My Masterpiece, both of which prominently featured Russell's gospel-flavored piano. In August, he played a set as part of George Harrison's Concert For Bangladesh. He also played on Badfinger's album Straight Up, including piano on the band's hit single, Day After Day. On top of all that, Russell released 2 albums in 1971 - Leon Russell & The Shelter People in May and Asylum Choir II in November. This FM broadcast captures him early on in the 2nd year of that incredibly productive period, in the Netherlands on February 5, 1971, 53 years ago today.

In the winter of 1968, Jimi Hendrix returned to North America for the first time since his 1967 summer shows leading in for the Monkees! He was touring in support of his second album, Axis Bold As Love, which had been released on December 1, 1967 in the UK and in early January in the US. The album climbed to #3 on the US charts, and has stood the test of time, with Rolling Stone ranking #83 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. As most of the album’s tracks were composed using complex studio recording techniques, they did not lend themselves to being played live. Only Little Wing and Spanish Magic Castle became long term fixtures in Jimi’s set lists. This soundboard recording captures him aduring the late show at the Fillmore in San Francisco on February 4, 1968, 56 years ago today, the last of an 8 show, 4 night run in the City By The Bay, half at the Fillmore and half at Winterland.

On September 29, 1997, the Rolling Stones released Bridges to Babylon, their last studio album of the 20th century. While the album met with mixed reviews, it still climbed to #3 of the Billboard charts in the US and certified platinum by November. The Stones launched a year long world wide tour in support of the album, announcing their plans at a press conference underneath the Brooklyn Bridge! The Bridges to Babylon Tour would become the largest Rolling Stones tour to date, exceeding the sales of their record-breaking 1994-1995 Voodoo Lounge Tour. Estimates are that over 4.5 million people attended the 108 shows played during the tour. Along the way, the Stones visited 25 countries on 4 continents. This soundboard recording captures the Stones on February 3, 1998, 26 years ago today, in San Diego, near the end of the first North American leg of the Bridges To Babylon tour.

Linda Ronstadt - 1975-02-02 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic NJ (SBD)

In November 1974, Linda Ronstadt released the album Heart Like A Wheel, produced in collaboration with Peter Asher and Andrew Gold. The result, a more refined and streamlined mix of Country and Rock than her previous releases, proved to be Ronstadt's commercial breakthrough. The disc would become Ronstadt’s first number 1 album on the Billboard charts, reaching that perch the same week in February 1975 that her single, You’re No Good, did the same! Within weeks of that event, Rolling Stone would feature Linda on the cover for the very first time. The album would eventually spend 51 weeks on the charts, and Billboard would name Ronstadt as their Female Pop Artist of the Year! After years of critical acclaim, Ronstadt had become an “overnight sensation". She would reign for the rest of the decade and well into the 80’s as the Queen of Rock. This soundboard recording captures Linda on Februart 2, 1975, 49 years ago today, at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, right as Heart Like a Wheel and You’re No Good were making their climb to the top of the charts.
