As mentioned in several posts here at So Many Roads, the Grateful Dead’s concerts from summer 1989 through fall 1991 were a highpoint in the band’s career. That period includes numerous shows that the Dead have officially released including the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989; the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989; the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990; the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990; the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990 and a recent 6 show, 18 CD set from Spring 1990. The Dead ended this wonderful 2 1/2 year in the fall of 1991 with 9 shows at Madison Square Garden, 6 at the Boston Garden and 5 in the San Francisco/Oakland area. Earlier this month, we brought you the September 9 show from MSG. Today, we have a soundboard recording from the last night in Boston on September 26, 1991, 22 years ago today (the same day by the way of our Warren Haynes post from earlier today!). By the way, maybe the Dead also sensed something was coming to an end at that September 26 concert as it was the last time the band ever played And We Bid You Goodnight.

Warren Haynes - 1991-09-26 - New York City, NY (SBD)

We’ve received several requests here at So Many Roads for some music from Warren Haynes, so we’re proud to bring you our first post from the guitar legend. And what month could be more appropriate than when we are discussing artists with connections to the Grateful Dead. This concert features Warren on September 26, 1991, 22 years ago today, taking a time out from his work with the Allman Brothers for a solo show. The Warren Haynes/Grateful Dead Connection

Interestingly, most of Warren’s connections to the Grateful Dead come from the period after Jerry Garcia’s untimely death in 1995. From 1999 to 2003, Haynes played guitar for Phil Lesh and Friends. Then in 2004 and 2009, He played with The Dead, one of the several post Grateful Dead incarnations of the band. On the last night of The Dead’s 2004 tour, Warren also played a solo acoustic set, then sat in with the Allman Brothers, who were co-headlining the night. The next day, Warren was back on the road as part of the Allmans’ tour! Of course, since 1989, Warren has played with the Allmans, a band with a long history of being connected to the Grateful Dead, on a regular basis. Earlier this year, Warren launched his Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration tour, a series of shows in which he played a set list composed entirely of Garcia & Grateful Dead tunes, backed by a symphony orchestra. For those show, Haynes played Garcia’s famed Wolf guitar. On August 1, 2013, he was appropriately in San Francisco, backed by that city’s orchestra, for a concert in celebration of what would have been Garcia’s 71st birthday.

1990s - #5: As long time readers of this blog know, I've spent numerous posts discussing the Dead's renaissance between 1989 and 1991. That period includes numerous shows that the Dead have officially released including the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989; the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989; the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990;  the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990 and 2 - yes 2 - box sets encompassing the entire Spring 1990 tour. The Dead ended this wonderful 3 year run in the fall of 1991 with 9 shows at Madison Square Garden, 6 at the Boston Garden and 5 in the San Francisco/Oakland area. The Septembe 25 show from Boston has been officially released, and a few years ago we brought you the final night in Boston on September 26, which Deadbase rated as even better than the prior night! Today we bring you the Dead from September 24, 1991, 31 years ago today, a show that often gets overlooked in comparison to the 2 following nights, but shoukldn;'t as it features a great Dark Star, not to mention fine versions of New Speedway Boogie, Foolish Heart.and The Weight.

In fact, it was the first time I had ever heard the band play any of the 3, and they all showed up on the same night!

Grateful Dead - 1991-09-08 - Madison Square Garden, New York, NY (SBD)

In September 1991, the Grateful Dead played a 9 night run at Madison Square Gareden, matching the record they set in 1988. (Since then Bruce Springsteen with 10, Billy Joel with 12 and now this year Phish with a 13 show run have broken that record,).  The stand will always be remembered for night 3 on September 10, when Branford Marsalis sat in, a show I was at and  that was officially released as part of the 30 Trips Around the Sun Box set.  That said, the opening 2 shows of the run were nothing to sneeze at, as the Dead were still in the midst of a wonderful period of high quality performances that had begun in early 1989 and stretched through the end of 1991. This soundboard captures night 1 of the run, on September 8, 1991, 26 years ago today.  The show includes a rare 2nd set opener of Samson & Delilah, a a unique Eyes of The World segue into Saint of Circumstance and an Attics of My Life encore. Grateful Dead - 1991-08-16 - Mountain View, CA (SBD)

On September 3, 1977, me and my buddies, along with 150,000 others, made the pilgrimage to Englishtown NJ, to see the Grateful Dead play the largest concert in the state's history. The day was hot - over 100 degrees - and the band was even hotter., as evidenced by the fact the show was officailly released as Dick's Picks #15.  I would see 49 more after that, at least 1 show every year except 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1992, with the last show being June 18, 1995, just 2 month's before we lost Jerry Garcia. My long strange trip with the Dead was short compared to folks who saw hundreds of concerts, but it was memorable, as over a dozen shows that I attended were good enough to be officially released. It's been 31 years since we lost Jerry, and I still miss the magic.

GD 1991 - Back To Back - #1:  As the Dead took the stage in Oakland on December 31, 1991, 32 years ago today., more than just the calendar year 1991 was about to end. The 2 shows in our Back To Back set also mark the end of an incredble 3 year run that started back in July 1989. The list of officially released show from this period is impressive to say the least:

As mentioned in numerous posts on So Many Roads, between 1989 and 1991, the Grateful Dead played some of their finest performances not just since Jerry Garcia recovered from his diabetic coma in 1987, but also since the band’s peak in the 1970s. Grateful Dead - 1991-06-06 - Noblesville, IN (SBD)

The Grateful Dead were at the center of the musical and cultural revolution that highlighted the Summer of Love in 1967. The band released their debut album that year, and played festivals such as the Human Be-In and of course, Monterrey Pop. Their psychedelic sound became synonymous with San Francisco, as did the image of hippies and the Flower Power Generation. Around 100,000 people traveled to San Francisco in the summer of 1967 and the media was right behind them. On July 7, Time Magazine featured a cover story entitled, The Hippies: The Philosophy of a Subculture, casting a spotlight on the Haight-Ashbury district of the city. Of course, the Dead were squarely in the middle of that as well, as the band was living at 710 Ashbury.  Since the Dead were such a part of 1967 (and of my live concert experiences), we decided to bring you shows this month from each decade they performed.  You'll get their 1967 set at Monterrey Pop later this month, as well as concrts from the 1970s and 1980. So today and tomorrow we visit the 1990s  The year 1991 may have been the last peak for the band, before Bruce Hornsby left in March 1992 and Garcia's health deteriorated, While Fall 1991 tends to get most of the love, the Spring run had plenty of stellar moments.
