Welcome to part 1 of our penultimate “Back to Back” entry for this month. After a highly successful tour in 1985, including a triumphant appearance at Live Aid, Eric Clapton took most of 1986 off. The few shows he did play, however, featured a brand new band. Whereas in 1985, 6 or 7 band members backed EC, the 1986 group featured only 3 other musicians - Nathan East on bass, Greg Phillinganes on keyboards and Phil Collins on Drums. Collins also served as the producer for Clapton’s latest album August, which he released on November 24, 1986. Just days prior to the album’s debut, Clapton and his new band traveled to the US for a series of club shows. Two years ago, we posted one of those gigs, from the Ritz in New York on November 23, 1986. Today we bring you a soundboard recording from the first of two nights in Boston at The Metro on November 20, 1986, 26 years ago today.
