After playing in San Diego on November 14, 1973, the Dead took 3 days off, which is why you had to wait so long for part 2 of our back to back entry. That said, trust me, you’ll find it was worth the wait. When the band hit Los Angeles on November 17, 1973, 39 years ago today, they treated the City of Angels to what Dead Heads like to call a “Playin’ Sandwich”. Early in the 2nd Set, the Dead launched into Playing In The Band, which slowly morphed into Uncle John’s Band and the segued into Morning Dew. At the end of Dew, the band reversed the sequence, going back into Uncle John’s Band and then returning to Playing, thus closing the sandwich. The band only performed that sequence about a half dozen times, Of course, that’s only one of the highlights of yet another stellar 1973 performance.
