GD 1969 - Back To Back - #2:  As promised, here's our 2nd post in our Back To Back entry featuring the grateful Dead in 1969.  A day after their concert in Santa Barbara, the Dead appeared on Hugh Hefners's Playboy After Dark TV show,  The contrast in styles - the tied dyed San Francisco based band vs Hollywood Hefner in a tux  - couldn't have been more stark. Yet, below the surface, both the Dead and Hefner shared the 60's values of pushing the boundaries. The Dead experimented chemically and musically. taj=king concerts to places never imagined.  Hefner made sexual content mainstream, testing the limits of what pictures and content could be published in Playboy. This soundboard recording captures that legendary appearance, on January 18, 1969, 45 years ago today.  By the way, according to Bill Kreutzman, the Dead’s sound engineer, and resident LSD synthesizer Owsley “Bear” Stanley slipped some of his homemade psychedelic concoction into the Playboy After Dark crew’s coffee supply, effectively dosing the entire staff for the late-night program.
