JT 1971 - #1: In February 1970, James Taylor released Sweet Baby James, the album which put his career on the map. The disc reached #3 on the Billboard charts, as did the single Fire and Rain. Critics hailed the disc as a folk rock masterpiece. In January 1971, he began work on his next album, Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon, which would be released in April of that year. That album would go to #2 on the charts, and the single from it, You’ve Got A Friend, would hit the top of the charts. Taylor would also receive a Grammy for that song. This soundboard recording of the early show at the Fillmore East, from January 25, 1971, 44 years ago today, captures Taylor right between his 2 biggest selling albums. While he does not play You’ve Got A Friend, several other tunes from his then upcoming album are included in the set list, such as Riding On A Railroad. Highway Song and Hey Mister, That’s Me Up On The Jukebox. In addition, he plays some of his most famous tunes from Sweet Baby James, including the title track, Fire and Rain and Country Road.
