On March 7, 1979, an overflow crowd of 400 watched as a man in dark glasses and a purple suit approach the grand piano wedged between the desks and podium of the Georgia House of Representatives. Seconds later, Ray Charles launched into Georgia on My Mind, one of the most celebrated songs of his career. The song that Ray had taken to the top of the pop charts now had a new honor – the state song of the state of Georgia. That designation became official just a few weeks later on April 24, 1979. This FM broadcast catches him a few months later in 1979, on October 23, 39 years ago today, in Austin Texas. Download this one to hear the man called Genius play Georgia’s state song, along with Hit The Road Jack, What I Say, and of course, I Can’t Stop Loving You.
