ENGLAND - For Eric Clapton, 1998 was the worst of times and the best of times. Early in the year, he released the album Pilgrim, his first disc of original material since 1989’s Journeyman. In producing Pilgrim, Clapton’s goal was to make the “saddest album possible”, in large part to mourn the loss of his son Conor, who had died 7 years before in a tragic accident. Two of the tunes dated back to that tragedy, My Father's Eyes and Circus, the latter of which was about the last time he saw his son, when he took him to the circus. The titles of several other songs on the disc reflected the themes of loss and sadness, such as Broken Hearted, Sick & Tired and River of Tears. Clapton went on tour in the US in support of Pilgrim in March 1998. During that tour, he met and fell in love with Melia McEnery. They were married on January 1, 2002, and now have 3 daughters. In the midst of heartbreak, EC found a new lease on life. The Pilgrim tour continued for the rest of the year, returning to England in October, where EC played 3 nights at Earl’s Court. This soundboard recording of the first night, October 15, 1998, 21 years ago today, is unique in several respects. First, Eric plays acoustic guitar on 4 numbers, a rarity in concert for him. Second, he’s supported not only by his regular band, but also by a 20 piece orchestra. Third, Bonnie Raitt joins him during the encores for Before You Accuse Me. Finally, the sound is so good on this bootleg, that the Geetarz website, which normally rates bootlegs on a scale of 1 (worst) to 6 (best), gave this recording a 7!
