Jim Messina, formerly of Poco and the Buffalo Springfield, was working as an independent record producer for Columbia Records in 1970 when he met Kenny Loggins, a little known singer and songwriter who was signed to ABC Records. The two recorded a number of Loggins' compositions in Messina's home living room. Messina then helped Loggins negotiate a 6 album record deal with Columbia. Loggins began recording his debut album for Columbia in early 1971, with Messina serving as producer. By the time the album was completed, however, Messina had contributed so much to the album - songwriting, arrangements, instrumentation, and vocals - that his guest spot turned into a full time partnership with Loggins. Over the next 5 years, they would sell over 16 million records, establishing themselves as the best selling duo of the 1970s, a record they held until surpassed by Hall & Oates later in the decade. In 1976, they made the decision to pursue solo careers, but played one last tour before they went their separate ways. This FM broadcast captures them during that Farwell Tour, at the Nassau Coliseum August 21, 1976, 46 years ago today.
