On August 6, 1987, 35 years ago today, Stevie Wonder played a benefit concert, as captured in this soundboard recording, that raised over $1.5 million to help fight the disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa. Wonder had a personal connection to the cause as his e;emntary school teacher was afflicted by the disease. The show also touched on other social causes important to Stevie - he dedicated his song Frontline to Vietnam veterans and his Oscar-winning I Just Called to Say I Love You to the then imprisoned South African activist Nelson Mandela. An interesting note about the show itself - Wonder had programmed all the instrumentation into a computer before the show, which gave him total control over the music. For example, he used the technology to experiment with several different computerized tempo settings on My Cherie Amour before settling on the right one.
