In January 2022, Elvis Costello released his 32nd studio album, entitled The Boy Named If. While the disc only reached #200 on the US Album charts, it climbed all the way to #6 on the UK charts.  This IEM Matrix recording captures Elvis on tour in support of the labum on August 9, 2022, a year ago today.

Back in 1977, when I heard punk rocker Elvis Costello for the first time, I couldn't imagine I would one day be writing about his connection to such classic bands as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and The Band.  In 2022, just over a month after the show posted today, Elvis played 2 shows at the Great American Music Hall entitled "Elvis Costello Sings Hunter-Garcia.”  That's not the first time in his career Costello has been linked to San Fransco's greatest pychedelic jam band.  In 1989, Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir joined Costello for a jam session at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley CA (posted here on So Mnay Roads). It was so spontaneous that Jerry had to borrow Elvis' guitar! Costello was also one of the artists who participated in the Deadicated tribute album in 1991, performing a cover of the Garcia/Hunter composition Ship of Fools.  He later covered another Garcia/Hunter tune, It Must Have Been The Roses on a 2nd tribute album entitled Stolen Roses. Costello continued his relationship with the Grateful Dead even after Jerry's  passing - he joined Further on stage in on March 27, 2001, at a show in New York. where he sang vocals on three "Jerry tunes" - Friend of the Devil, Ship of Fools, and Ripple - while wife Diana Krall sat in on keyboards!

Elvis also has some connections to both the Allmans an The Band. Warren Haynes has covered Allison in concert and worked with Costello on a tune called Funny Little Tragedy. On November 21, 2009, Elvis and Gregg Allman performed together at a beneft held at the Waldorf Astoria to raise funds to cure Parkinson's Disease. Robbie Robertson sat in with Elvis in 1995 at a concert in Italy to play I Shall Be Released.  He also played with Elvis at the 2006 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony.  Levon Helm played with Elvis on 5 different occaisons, inclduing a taping of Costello's show Spectacle on September 24, 2009.
