As part of our tribute to Jerry Garcia this month, we'll bring you a host of shows highlighting the numerous bands Garcia played in outside of the Grateful Dead, all the while keeping up a full touring and recording schedule with them! In 1969, Garcia, along with Dave Nelson and John
Dawson founded the New Riders Of The Purple Sage (NRPS), a country/folk rock band.
During his 3 year stint with the New Riders, Jerry played pedal steel guitar a
marked change from his improvisational electric guitar work with the Dead. While Garcia's stint as a permanent member of NRPS was short, it often found him doing double duty during live performances. For example, in 1971, he played 73 times with the New Riders,
often when they were leading in for the Dead, meaning he was on stage some 4 to
5 hours each night between the two bands, playing 2 different instruments in the
process! This soundboard recording captures one of the earliest shows by the New Riders, with Garcia on pedal steel, on August 7, 1969, 56 years ago today. According to several sources, the ads for this show were the first time the name New Riders Of The Purple Sage was used publicly.

Seeing the New Riders open for the Dead in 1970 and 1971 was just amazing. When NRPS left the stage you felt like you had already heard a ton of Jerry and you still had two sets of Grateful Dead ahead of you. There's nothing quite like the psychedelic country sound that Jerry got out of the pedal steel and Marmaduke, Nelson and Torbert were all great players.
