An excerpt from my book, Ten Rules of the Road I Learned At My First Concert, provides the perfect context for today's post: "In case you are wondering why Deadheads often use the phrase “got on the bus” to describe becoming fans of the band, it stems from the Dead’s association with Ken Kesey in the 1960s. Kesey, the author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Sometime A Great Notion, began experimenting with psychedelic drugs around 1962. In 1964, he and a group of friends, called the Merry Pranksters, traveled across the United States in a psychedelic painted school bus named Furthur, handing out LSD along the way. Those who “got on the bus” and travelled with Kesey were looking to challenge the established cultural norms of the day. The bus was driven by Neal Cassady, who became the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's classic novel, On the Road. Furthur and Cassady are both referenced in the Dead’s song “The Other One”, in the line "Captain Neal at the wheel of the bus to Never Never Land". The Dead also served as the house band for Kesey’s Acid Tests, in other words LSD parties, in San Francisco in the late 1960s. The saga of Kesey and The Merry Pranksters is documented in Tom Wolfe’s critically acclaimed book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test." This soundboard recording captures one of those acid tests, from the Fillmore in San Francisco on January 8, 1966, 57 years ago today.

Just a quibble, but On the Road predates Kesey and the Pranksters by seven or eight years, so Neal "had been" the inspiration for Dean Moriarty, he didn't "became"
