The Beatles - 1966-06-24 - Munich, Germany (SBD)

The Beatles ruling the Summer of Love in 1967 was a direct result of two major events in 1966.  The first was the release of the album Revolver in August 1966.  That disc, which many critics feel is finest work ever produced by the Fab Four, started the process of making albums, rather than singles, the focus of the band's efforts.  In addition, the music, lyrics and themes of the album were directly influenced by the band's use of psychedelic drugs, as well as the growing counter culture movement of the times.  Moreover, Revolver demonstrated the Beatles willingness to experiment in the studio with sound. instruments and technology,  techniques they would take to new heights with Sgt. Pepper's. The second decision was to cease touring at the end of 1966.  The band had grown frustrated with the sound quality of their live shows, the fact that the audience was barely listening to the music, and the growing security issues at each venue. In addition, they knew that the new music they were creating, such as the songs on Revolver, could never be reproduced on stage to due all the studio effects they were using.  Moreover, they saw working in the studio as the new path to expand their musicianship, innovate and create. Touring simply took them away from the studio work and interfered with the creative process. Once off the road, they had unlimited studio time, and the result was Sgt Pepper's.  This television soundboard recording captures The Beatles during that final tour, in Germany on June 24, 1966, 56 years ago today.
