1970s - #2: In November 1973, Billy Joel released Piano Man, his first album on Columbia Records, and 2nd disc overall (1971's Cold Spring Harbor had been released by Family Productions and was mastered at the wrong speed, resulting in a commercial and critical flop). The title track, a fictionalized retelling of Joel's experiences while working as a lounge singer in Los Angeles under the pseudonym Bill Martin, peaked at #25 on the Billboard Charts. The album climbed to #27 on the US Billboard 200. This soundboard recording captures Joel on tour in support of his breakthrough disc, in Denver on May 10, 1974, 51 years ago today.

Thanks, this is a rare treat. And to Billy Joel fans interested in this, get it while you can. His recent health woes would hint that Billy Joel will likely no longer record (he put a single out last year but no album) but may not be touring much longer either. His label will push to put out everything they can on him.
