Between 1966 and 1991, the Grateful Dead played on New Year's Eve on 22 occaisions, with a run on 16 straight years between 1976 and 1991. Every one of those shows was in the Bay Area, except for 1969, when they played in Boston! The 1984 New Year's Eve show, as captured in this soundboard recording from December 31, 1984, 4 decades ago today, would be the last one in the city of San Francisco. All future December 31 concerts were held in Oakland. This one was broadcast nationally on the radio, and I remember racing home from a party to try to tape it. I also still remember - not always fondly - trying to time when to flip and/or change tapes, struggling to stay up to 3 am to catch the whole show (damn 3 hour time difference between NY and SF, hoping the radio signal didn't suddenly drop, and all the other horrors of the technology of the day. All you have to do is download it! Happy New Year!

Ah the good old days of radio broadcast recording! I did that as well, especially these New Year's shows. But I was living in the Bay Area so the timing was much easier. I had the cassette deck recording off the radio and sometimes they'd also broadcast the 2nd set live on the local PBS television channel and I'll get that recording too. All this was always a challenge, but fun. Thanks so much, G.
