As mentioned in numerous earlier posts, Jerry Garcia made a miraculous comeback in 1987, escaping death’s door when he finally emerged from a diabetic coma. After re-teaching himself to play guitar, Jerry rejoined the Grateful Dead and the band embarked on one of their best tours in years. The fall 1987 shows, especially those at Madison Square Garden, were especially memorable, with the 9-18-1987 show often being cited as one of the best of the decade. Soon after the fall tour ended, Garcia embarked on a new venture. Jerry took up residence at the historic Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York’s Broadway district from October 15 to October 31.  Garcia played 18 concerts in 13 days, with 5 days featuring both the traditional Broadway matinee and a late show. Each show consisted of an acoustic set followed by an electric set.  As the year came to a close, Garcia, along with Grateful Dead bandmate Bob Weir, and long time collaborator, bassist John Kahn, played an acoustic set at a benefit concert hosted by Joan Baez to raise funds to fight AIDs.   This soundboard recording captures their set that night, December 17.1987, 37 years ago today, with Joan sitting in for the 3 three songs.
