As mentioned in our Bob Dylan post, The Band spent the spring opf 1967 working with Dylan, a set of recordings that would become the legndary Basement Tapes. The tunes were truly recorded in the basement, at a house in West Saugerties, a town near Woodstock, know as Big Pink, where The Band would also record their debut album appropriately titled, Music From Big Pink (A side note - its pretty incredible that one house was the site of 2 legendary albums). This excellent audience recording captures them 26 years after the Summer Of Love, and 29 years ago today, in Chicago. They are joined for one somg by John Sebastian, another veteran of 1967. That year, Sebastian's band, the Loving' Spoonful, had 3 top 40 hits - Darling Be Home Soon at #18, Six O'clock at #15 and She Is Still A Mystery at #27. Sadly, it was the beginning of the end for the Spoonful, as dissension and personnel changes that year led to Sebastian leaving the group in 1968 and the band;s eventual demise in 1969.
