One of the best parts of running this blog getting to introduce folks to music you love, regardless of the genre or how poular it is. For example, we've brought you shows from folks such as Marshall Crenshaw, John Hiatt, Rachel Sweet and the Holmes Brothers, who while not exactly The Beatles or The Stones, have made some incredibly fine music that just doesn't get enough attention. Well, here in 2016, we're going to bring you plenty of music from another of my favorites, a legendary singer and performer who left us was too soon, the one and only Bobby Darin.  This TV soundboard recording captures Darin on the Tonight Show, hosted by Johnny Carson, on February 6, 1973, 43 years ago today. Take a listen to Darin's unique take on You Are My Sunshine which he seamlessly segues into Got My Mojo Working, then dives into Splish Splash.

James Taylor - 1970-02-06 - Syracuse, NY (SBD)

In late summer 1969, James Taylor broke his hands and feet in a motorcycle accident on Martha's Vineyard. The injuries, however, did not stop him from writing songs. In fact, the tunes he penned that fall would comprise his breakthrough album, the landmark disc entitled Sweet Bay James. Released in February 1970, Sweet Baby James would rise to #3 on the Billboard charts. So would the single from the disc, Fire and Rain, a song about Taylor's experience in psychiatric institutions and the suicide of his friend, Suzanne Schnerr. Sweet Baby James received a Grammy nomination for Album of The Year, and has been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Rock Albums of All Time, clocking in at #103 on that list. This soundboard recording captures James Taylor in concert in Syracuse on February 6 1970, 46 years ago today, just about the time when Sweet Baby James was released. Bruce Springsteen – 1975-02-05 – Bryn Mawr, PA (FM)

As Bruce Springsteen entered 1975, he had gone almost a year and a half without releasing an album. During that time, he toured relentlessly, playing small clubs and college campuses across the United States. When not on the road, he was in the studio, working on his next disc. Recording the album became a monumental undertaking for Springsteen. He was continually frustrated with the development of the album, saying he heard "sounds in [his] head" that he could not explain to the others in the studio. Finally Bruce brought in Jon Landau to help with production, which was the beginning of the end of his relationship with producer and manager Mike Appel. All told, the recording of what would become his masterpiece, Born To Run, took over 14 months, with 6 spent on the title track alone. So 41 years ago today, on February 5, 1975, when Bruce played the Main Point, one of those small clubs referenced earlier, the album was still a work in progress. Download this FM broadcast of that show, therefore, to get a glimpse into Born To Run in its formative stages,, including early versions of the title track, Jungleland and Thunder Road, which at this point was known as Wings For Wheels!

After forming the super group in early 1969 Blind Faith along wioth Steve Winwood and Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton quickly grew tired of the band.   In fact, during Blind Faith'st band's only tour, EC found himself spending more time with opening act Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett than he was with Winwood and Baker! Once the tour ended, EC left Blind Faith and joined up with Delaney & Bonnie. Bachman Turner Overdrive - 1974-02-04 - Cleveland, OH (FM)

In December 1973, Bachman-Turner Overdrive released their 2nd album, the approximately, if not all that originally, titled Bachman–Turner Overdrive II,   The disc became a huge hit in the US, climbing to #4 on the Billboard charts.  The album also yielded two of the band's best known and most successful singles, Let It Ride and Takin' Care of Business, which went to #23 and #12, respectively, on the Billboard charts  This FM broadcast captures the band just 2 months after the release of BTO II, in Cleveland, on February 4, 1974, 42 years ago today.

Elvis Presley - 1973-02-03 - Las Vegas NV (SBD) (Early)

While today, Howard Stern has crowned himself King Of All Media, back in early 1973 that title belonged to Elvis. In late 1972, his single Burning Love reached #2 on The Billboard charts, and #1 on the Cashbox Top 40 list. The tune would be Elvis's 40th and final Top 40 hit. On January 28, 1973, MGM's film, Elvis On Tour, won a Golden Globe Award for best documentary. Two weeks prior to that, on January 14, Elvis has played a concert from Hawaii which was broadcast around the world via satellite to an audience of over 1 billion people. Ironically, the show was not broadcast live in the US as it conflicted with the Super Bowl. American audiences had to wait until April to see the concert. RCA released a live album entitled Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite, which captured the concert in its entirety. The disc climbed all the way to #1 on the Billboard charts. So, as Elvis took the stage in Las Vegas on February 2, 1973, 43 years ago as captured in this soundboard recording, he clearly was on top of the world. It would be all downhill for the King, however, from that point until his death in 1977.

Van Morrison - 1974-02-02 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

Exactly 4 years to the day after our the Jefferson Airplane concert from Winterland that we posted earlier today, Van Morrison took the stage at that exact same venue.  At just about that same moment, Van released the classic live album It's Too Late Too Stop Now which featured his historic 1973 tour backed by the 11 piece Caledonia Soul Orchestra.  Of course, in typical Van fashion, he had disbanded that group and was playing with a new assortment of musicians for this 1974 tour. He was also testing out material he had written during a 3 week vacation in Belfast back in October 1973, songs which would eventually comprise the album Veedon Fleece, released later in 1974.  So this show from February 2, 1974, 42 years ago today, finds Van in a period of flux, something he too must have released, as his 1977 album follow up to Veedion Fleece would be entitled A Period of Transition!
