Hot Tuna - Back To Back 2000 - #1: Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady first worked together in 1965, as members of the Jefferson Airplane. In 1969, while still with the Airplane, they launched a side project called Hot Tuna, an acoustic duo that focused on their blues roots. In 1972, after the Airplane dissolved, Hot Tuna went electric, featuring long instrumental jams in concert. While I'm not a big fan of their electric music, I do find something unique and compelling about acoustic Hot Tuna. Elvis Costello - 1977-12-05 - Cleveland, OH (FM)

Elvis Costello - Back To Back 1977 - #1:  In 1976, at the outset of the punk rock/new wave boom, entrepreneurs Dave Robinson and Andrew Jakeman (aka Jake Riviera) founded Stiff Records in London. They quickly signed and promoted dozens of new artists, including Nick Lowe, Wreckless Eric Ian Dury, and one Declan Patrick MacManus, better known as Elvis Costello. Costello released his first single on Stiff, Less Than Zero, in March 1977. It failed to chart, the same fate that befell his next 2 singles, Alison and (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes. Stiff Records had faith in Costello, however, and released his debut album, My Aim is True, in July 1977. The album did far better than the singles, reaching #14 on the UK charts. At the time, neither the singles nor the album were released in the US, however, as Stiff only had distribution deals in the UK. Stiff’s faith in Costello was further rewarded when he became the clear star of the Live Stiffs Tour of the UK that ran from October 3 to November 5, 1977. Folks across the pond started to notice Costello, and he signed with CBS records. As the Stiff Tour concluded, Elvis crossed the Atlantic for his first series of live shows in the US. This FM broadcast captures Elvis & The Attractions on December 35, 1977, 4 decades ago this very day in Cleveland. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this back to back entry. By the way, just about 2 weeks after this show on December 17, Costello would be performing on Saturday Night Live, where his decision to stop playing Less Than Zero in order to perform Radio Radio, would result in his being banned from that show for over a dozen years!

Eric Clapton - Back to Back 1974 - #1:  After returning to the stage in January 1973 at the Rainbow Concert, and finally kicking his addiction to heroin, Eric Clapton went into the studio in April 1973 to record his first solo album. The resulting disc, 461 Ocean Boulevard, went to #1 on the Billboard charts, as did the single I Shot The Sheriff, a remake of the Bob Marley classic. Clapton went on tour in the US in late June 1974, about the same time as the album was released. Incredibly, soundboard or FM recordings exist for almost every show of that tour. Perhaps the decision to tape every show reflected the chart success of 461 Ocean Boulevard, coupled with the excitement generated by EC’s return to the stage after finally kicking his heroin addiction. Of course, the soundboards reveal that while EC may have been clean of heroin, he had found a new demon. Slowhand sounds sloshed at many of these 1974 shows, the result of his growing dependency on alcohol   He returned to the US in the Fall of 1974, then toured Japan in November,  he finished his historic come back year with 4 shows in Europe, with the final 2 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.
