After returning to the stage in January 1973 at the Rainbow Concert, and finally kicking his addiction to heroin, Eric Clapton went into the studio in April 1973 to record his first solo album. The resulting disc, 461 Ocean Boulevard, went to #1 on the Billboard charts, as did the single I Shot The Sheriff, a remake of the Bob Marley classic. Clapton went on tour in the US in late June 1974, about the same time as the album was released. Incredibly, soundboard or FM recordings exist for almost every show of that tour. Those recordings reveal a more laid back EC, who was now battling a new addiction, alcohol. This soundboard captures him on July 9, 1974, 3 dozen years ago today, at the Forum in Montreal.
